Hi. I am a Computer Science student and have received some admissions from: WPI, URI, IIT, MTU, PolyNYU.

I am interested in Human-Computer Interactive program, but I am not sure which graduate school listed above has good HCI program. Can the CS major rankings of these schools tell the fact about which one is better?

I will appreciate your help. :)

I would say that the rankings of an overall CS program don’t apply as much to a specific subset within CS. Check the catalog and see that there are enough HCI classes to choose from, maybe see that psychology is a required course in the program (just guessing on that!). I think that’s a great course of study, btw.

Funny. If you haven’t mentioned this course, I wouldn’t even have noticed. It’s an interesting course and I am also into it, hope to find a chance to learn about it. Thanks for your advice of checking the catalog.

Anyway, which graduate school ranks better in the field of overall CS program? Among these 5 schools?

For straight Computer Science, I would say that WPI, IIT and PolyNYU are on a similar footing. I know that at Illinois Institute of Technology the Humanities department (Technical Communications program) is heavily involved with computer science in the digital humanities area and human computer interface.

Good luck deciding.

Thanks for your info, xraymancs.

Is PolyNYU that good? Good at academics as well as job-hiring rank?

Actually the major I applied for WPI is Interactive Media & Game Development, I have checked the courses and found it could meet my requirement and interest. But the only worry is that its tuition and expenses are way more than which I could afford.

I knew some former faculty from Poly-NYU but they were there some time ago before it became part of NYU so any information is quite dated.

Frankly, it is not worth going way into debt for a B.S. Your degree is what you make it and you can do well starting from any competent program that you take full advantage of. Starting salaries might be a bit lower from some of the institutions you have been admitted to than others but if you don’t have a high debt load, it is like having a higher salary. Weigh all the options carefully in that light.

Thanks. Your advises are practical.

BTW, has Poly-NYU already been a part of NYU?

Poly- NYU is pretty much part of NYU since 2007 but they are officially merging into the school in 2014 (calling it NYU School of engineering and Technology)

I was admitted to NYU-poly this year. I decided to attend IIT next year. The fact that it is merging with NYU to form the school of engineering is not appealing at all. It means that it will be just a department of a bigger institution that does not have a reputation in engineering.

Remember the reason NYU is merging with poly , is because NYU has always lacked an Engineering Technology department; and therefore could not compete with other top schools on that field.

But since you are looking for Computer science, Big Universities with a lot of majors and departments may not be the right choice for you. The reason for that is Employers for Engineering, and computer science tend to look for students coming out of schools that focus on those fields, NYU doesn’t have a big point on engineering, it will take years for the Engineering department to start getting a reputation. the trend from employers today is not the old “diversity”, they are looking for students with a high experience and focus on the field they are in, especially for computer science jobs.

Thus, you might start considering, Technical schools such as RPI, WPI, Caltech, MIT, IIT, MTU.

Since you got into WPI, IIT and MTU, I would suggest that any of these three is perfect for computer Science. Although you might need Internships and coops, so i suggest you go to a school that is close or inside a big city. IIT would be your best choice at that point. Also its graduates have a great reputation among employers for Engineering. Also, if anyone here cares about the academics, among you list, IIT has the highest difficulty and highest scoring students, and IIT students are known to perform extremely well in their field of work at companies that employed them.

Hope I helped.
