"Good" IB Scores -???

This is a long question. I'm sorry, but:

I am receiving my IB Diploma at the end of my junior year, so I will have my IB scores when I apply to college. This is my first question - can I self report them, or do I have to pay the IBO to send them officially?

Second part -

I have a 40 on the IB diploma - two 7s, 4 6s, and 2 extra points. I know these scores are not horrible, and not even really bad - I think that they're pretty solidly good. Are they worth sending to schools? Or will they hurt me in applying to truly elite schools (HYPS, UChicago, etc)? A consideration I have in this is that at my school, our IB pass rate is very low, and the average points someone may get are usually around 25-27. In comparison, my scores are very good - but would it reflect badly on my character to point this out?

Finally, how much do IB scores even come into account if you already have them during the admissions process? Will it help me at all that I'm accelerated a full year in IB? And how would a discrepancy between the IB score of 40 and my SAT (2250) and ACT (34) scores play out into admissions??? (Or is there a discrepancy?)

I'm sorry. These seem like stupid questions... but I would really appreciate anyone's ideas or help.

last i checked, a 40 was really good… a friend of mine with a predicted 40 got into Upenn…i am probably going to get predicted a 37 or a 38 and i think thats good…but its all relative… but yea send it in…

You are actually really stupid. You should be ashamed of those scores. I think they, as in U of C, Gtown, the Ivies, ect. should accept the kid who is 3rd in your class, with 2110 SATs, and barely achieved his diploma.

Hmm, try applying to LFCC, because that is the only place where you will be able to attend.

A 40 is really good.

Yes, it will help a lot, more so than AP scores because you took all the courses at the same time.

There is no discrepancy between your IB scores and your testing.

Yes, your IB score is worth sending to the top schools but they won’t guarantee anything. All four years of high school matter.

No, these are not stupid questions :)

How can you get your IB Diploma after your junior year? I’ve never heard of anyone doing that before. Don’t you have to be a senior to take HL classes (and TOK) or is that just a stupid rule that my school made up?

Ok, well thanks - other than rmadden15, who obviously has some issues (■■■■■) - I guess I’m just looking at all of the other cc kids who are better. But I will be applying to LFCC…

It’s not a stupid rule that your school made up, the problem is that you have to take all of your diploma classes in a 2 year period. Which means that you have to accelerate in every IB subject for your diploma to get it a year ahead of time. My school started accelerating kids in 5th grade to get their IB diplomas in their junior year, but I bet that for other schools that’s just more trouble than it is worth. For IB purposes, we are seniors in our junior years - we can just take random classes senior year.

IB dip= highschool dip, so if you have an IB dip you should be going to college this september…

I haven’t actually fulfilled my high school diploma yet (I need to take AP gov, and Health and PE 10… you can laugh now…) for the state of VA, so I can’t actually go to college, and my chances would be severely decreased b/c of liability issues with me being a minor (which would suck). I am actually going to take a bunch of college courses next year (JMU) because there is nothing else to do, other than those 2 classes, and a bunch of random IB electives for fun.

Username, you really don’t know what you are talking about.

It is funny Machiavellismile, my school does that too!!! But you should really look into LFCC. While it has a completely awful international relations and french programs, its garbage collecting and professional hobo courses are very impressive. Oh, and good luck in P.E, because I know it will bring your GPA down a bit. Hopefully the guy in 3rd does not beat you. :D

… Okay, whatever you say…

Where I’m from though, an IB dip is enough to get in college… because technically you don’t even need a highschool dip…

how the hell you get your diploma already?

^ She goes to a sick-nasty school? She is an amazing chica? I think it is both. :D

And username, I guess it is different in Northern VA, but here, the IB Dipoloma and HS Diploma are different.

It’s always different in Antarctica.

The IB dip and highschool dip is different, but I meant the IB dip is worth as much for applying to colleges.

^ Indeed. Here the diplomas are actually made of ice. :D

And yeah, the IB diploma is more important, but it does not matter unless you are allowed to even graduate with a high school diploma. :)

to the OP: A score of 40 is enough to get kids into Oxford. Getting it your JUNIOR year will DEFINITELY help your application. and your IB scores, I think, is pretty much on par with your ACT and SAT score. Really, the only score I got to self-report was my 5 in IB chem SL, but I still think it helped me (in at Brown) (then again, I got a 5 on the AP too, which doesn’t match).

There’s no need to point out what kids in your school usually get. You could ask your counselor to in your letter of rec, but if YOU do it it’ll sound snobby. And frankly, most schools that have IB programs average 4-5s on most tests. 27-30 really is about the average score, and most colleges know this.

It’s the school’s job to do that when they send colleges their profile. It’s definitely not your job to explain how your school does its job.

^Eh, you don’t know our school…

That is really amazing.

ibfootballer: Like I said (if that was actually a serious question; you never know online) - I accelerated in every subject. (Our school doesn’t do the whole “gifted” thing, they just say, okay, then, accelerate - double up or skip a year.)

rmadden15 - thanks for the input. (???) (Sorry. I would come up with a more creative come back, but I’m busy - though the guy in third would probably actually do a much better job on any salutatorian speech than I would, so that is a valid point.) By the way, your green smileys are creepy. And “our school…” definitely has the right tone attached to it…

chsowlflax17 - thank you. That puts this into perspective. My school has crappy counselors, but I suppose it really doesn’t make a difference. Do I have to pay IB to send out my scores though?
