Good idea to drop out of one language to another?

Hi
I was wondering if I dropped out of French even though I have three years of French? I started to take Japanese but my mom was mad that I didn’t take four years of French. I think that I finished French and I would started on another language. My school requires 2 years of a foreign language to graduate and colleagues request 3 years of the same language. Was it a good idea?

Why no, it won’t look “good;” I’m not sure why you think it would, nor do you indicate why you want to study Japanese.

Colleges request X number of years in the same language. Taking the college admissions question out of the equation, you will not learn enough Japanese in a year of HS to be meaningful; you’ll certainly won’t score high enough on a college placement test to skip out of any classes. If you really want to study it, study it in college.

I would stick with French. It is much more meaningful to have 4 years of the same language.

See #1. High school Japanese 1 is unlikely to place you higher than college Japanese 1, but high school French 4 may place you higher in college French than high school French 3 will.

You should take French 4, which most selective colleges want to see, and take Japanese 1 as your elective.
