Good International Affairs Diplomacy Schools for a B-Student

I am an Asian male living in MD with a 3.5 GPA and an 1860 SAT, 28 ACT. I’m interested in a career in diplomacy and international affairs, as the title suggests.

What are some good schools that I could have a good chance to get in?

I’m looking for a university that is fairly generous with scholarships/aid (income is a little higher than average, but not enough for $45K a year out of pocket) and located in a place that has access to potential internships and jobs in my field.

I know American and GW are good, but really competitive as well. Seton Hall doesn’t have their reputation but is a safe bet (side note: is their program worth it?) I don’t really know any others that aren’t a shot in the dark with my stats.

Any help and tips would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Run Syracuse’s [Net Price Calculator](Net Price Calculator) to see if it’s affordable.

It’s a reach for you academically, but Macalester, the LAC in St. Paul/Minneapolis, MN might be a good choice. Your stats are low - but you get a boost for being male (LACs tend to get more female applicants) and you are Asian (Asians are URMs at some midwestern schools.) Here’s the Common Data Set: https://www.macalester.edu/ir/institutionaldata/cds.pdf

IR is an area of noted strength for Macalester. Here’s more about their program: http://www.macalester.edu/academics/internationalstudies/

They are also known to be generous with financial aid. Run the NPI and see how much it would end up costing you.

Check out Clark University in Worcester, Mass. It has a good IR program and you have a good shot at getting in. The question is whether or not you will get enough aid.

TurnerT- they don’t have an IR program availible for undergrad unless you’re in the honors program (and with my stats, seems unlikely).

HObart and William Smith has a terrific program that’d be a match for you. Goucher is also well-connected for IR. I second Macalester as a good reach to try for (since you’d be URM/boy = two boosts).

If you can afford it, you would have a decent chance at American. My nephew was admitted there with barely a 3.0 and a 31 ACT (full pay, though)

eh1234- American is my dream school, but cost is going to be a big factor I fear.
