For any current UF student:

What are your impressions of the mathematics department? Do you consider it to be of high, medium, or low quality? Are there many research options available for undergraduates? How does UF do in the Putnam competition?

So far, a lot of UF's options seem to be pretty solid, but I can't find many resources concerning their mathematics department. I really want to study mathematics as an undergraduate and launch off to a nice doctoral program after I graduate - but if UF has a terrible mathematics program I'll have to rethink going there. Oh, and any indicators of student enthusiasm for the subject would be appreciated (e.g. is there a large body of talented mathematics students).

UF's math program isn't terrible at all. UF is amazing at everything ;)

To be frank math is probably one of the weaker areas at UF. I took a math minor and the instruction was pretty good but some of the classes go godawful slow. Some of the kids are pretty smart and enthusiastic, but there are a lot of dim bulbs especially in the applied math classes. Also, there's been budget problems in CLAS for awhile and this manifests itself in various ways (one time I took a class and the professor said there weren't the resources to print out syllabi so he wrote a website on the chalkboard where we could find the class information).

As for Putnam, I know UF participates in it but not much else. This may sound pessimistic, but realistically UF is the best choice in-state.

Also, I know nothing about their research so I can't help you there.

I think GT's comments are fair, but on-balance UF's math department is ranked fairly decently...58th for the grad department nationally. My son takes a lot of grad-level math classes for his PhD EE program, and he generally likes the profs and the small class sizes and teacher interaction. As an undergrad, he had positive experiences as well and did some UG research with one prof.
