Hello :)
I'm thinking of majoring in criminal justice.
What should i minor in that can be helpful in the future along with my major? or is it worth it to minor in something? Also, will it be a waste of money/time to go to grad school after majoring in criminal justice?

Why do you want to major in criminal justice? It is an utterly useless degree with few job prospects. And if your answer is “To become a cop” you do not need a CJ degree to be a cop. You can have a degree in ANYTHING and still become a cop. If you like the law, I would instead recommend a paralegal degree, this way it opens up job opportunities in law firms and corporations.

Well…yea…i dont know what else i should major in. T-T. im not good at anything like science/math stuff. and actually i don’t want to be a cop that much.lol

i’m just interested in law stuff but i heard paralegals don’t make a good money or do they? (not saying criminal justice degree does) also won’t i be limited to just one path when i become paralegal? i want to join FBI someday…so…^^;

So do 10 million other people. The FBI is one of the most difficult agencies to get hired by. Without any connections at the agency, you stand virtually no chance of being hired there. A CJ degree to be honest is toilet paper. Sorry to be harsh, but that is reality.

Yes, you will be limited if you get a paralegal degree. But a CJ degree will also limit you. Have you considered accounting or any other business major?

Great mentality…“I don’t want to be a cop, but I want to join the FBI.”

First, how do you expect to get in the FBI with no previous LE experience and a CJ degree?

Second, why the FBI? Do you know anything about the agency other than what you see on TV?

Without any connections at the agency, you stand virtually no chance of being hired there ~ Homer28

What are you talking about?

Are you implying you need an internal connection to get hired?

BUZZ, incorrect. I’ve worked for, with and interacted with dozens of agents and none of them had some internal pull when they got hired, other than good references/recommendations (which nearly all applicants who get to the BI phase have).

You just need to work through the process and be competitive.

hmmmmmmmmmmm i obviously don’t know how to respond now…=S

Homer28: Yes i actually have considered that as my major…but i don’t think it’s right for me.

BIGeastBEAST: Okay okay. Sorry to upset u. You are so scary…Calm down :(
Let me fix this “I don’t want to be a cop” —> “I don’t think I will be a good cop” (meaning i don’t mind being a cop but i don’t think i will be successful in it cuz of my personality) what type of majors do u recommend then?

For ur 2nd question…obviously no. i don’t know anything about the agency except for what i’ve read in the fbi/other websites. and from what i’ve read…it seemed exciting/rewarding/challenging experience to live as one of the fbi agents fighting injustice and protecting the country. (i know i sound like a child who’s dreaming)

Then perhaps, it seems like u know a lot about the agency. can u explain to me in general how it’s like to be in the agency? ;)

So when you and a fellow agent have to serve an arrest warrant, are you just gonna say…“ya know, I’m more of a introvet, you’re gonna have to go in there alone buddy.”

Makes more sense now. I thought you wanted to be a FBI Special Agent.

If you just want to work in Admin/Clerical roles go to school for something that will give you good office skills - business/business administration and HR comes to mind.

And in case I’m still not accurate on what you are saying - all 1811/Criminal Investigators (Special Agents) are what you referred to as “field agents.”

I am not giving misleading advice. The fact is that it is VERY hard to get hired by the FBI. The overwhelming majority of applicants will not even get an interview.

And office jobs are not any easier to get. I submitted several strong applicatiosn not too long ago and got rejection letters literally the next day.

An executive order was signed by the president for more average college students to be hired by the FBI, CIA & Secret Service, now they have 2 different wonderful interships offered by these government offices. So, don’t listen to people who truly do not know what they are talking about. I am a CJ major specializing in Forensics and minoring in Political Science. You keep those dreams and live by them, don’t let anyone take what you love to do away! You can do it!
However, you do need to make sure you do not have any criminal background because they do an extensive background check, and a lie detector. If anything is in your background, you will not get hired for internship or a job.
