Hi guys.
I am currently taking classes in a CCC, and here is the schedule I've done so far and will have done:

14 SUMMER
Calculus I (5)

14 FALL
Calculus II (5)
Java I (4)
Art101 (3)

15 SPRING
Calculus III (5)
English1A (4)
Differential Equation (3)
Linear Algebra (3)
Music 101 (3)

15 SUMMER
English1B (4) - not articulated for IGETC Area1, but for Area3(Humanities)

15 FALL
C++ (4)
Physics I (4)
Anthropology 101 (3)
Area4 (3)

16 SPRING
Data Structure (4)
English 126 (3) - for English Composition
Area4 (3)
Area4 (3)

Is it a good schedule for transferring to UCB L&S intended CS major? I mean, do I satiesfy both IGETC and core pre-requisites at the same time in 2yrs?
I already asked this to the counselor and she said it's good, but I can't trust the counselor in my college 100% and just want to make sure and double-check the schedule I'm planning.

What GPA does UCBerkeley expect for their transfers-to-be? 3.8? 3.9? I've heard that EECS requires only "4.0" with stellar ECs, but L&S CS is a little bit less selective.

Hmm…the concern would be 15 spring; taking three math classes and a total of 18 units. Why not take music 101 in 15 summer instead?

EECS doesn’t require a 4.0, I got in a couple years ago with ~3.7. Higher is better of course, and there’s always stories of 4.0 students who get rejected from Cal. But there’s no magic number where you’re in/out. So long as you’re above a 3.5 I’d say there’s hope, but a higher GPA leads to better chances.

I’d suggest trying to do something about this spring, if you can. 3 maths at once is stressful, even 2 can be hard to handle. Can you put one of them off til a later semester? 18 credits isn’t necessarily bad, but as someone who did the 18 credits with 3 maths thing before I’d say it’s a pretty sucky schedule. You need to keep a high GPA, so try to keep schedules balanced.

As for what you’re taking, it looks pretty normal. Double check your school’s IGETC requirements (your CCC’s website) and the pre-reqs on assist.org, and you’ll know from that if you’ve got everything covered.

Also, make sure you’ve got a back up school in mind. Even if you’re up near 4.0, it’s not guaranteed that you’ll get into either program. You should take a look at what your plan B school requires (use assist.org) and try to cover that with your scheduling as well. Generally speaking the CS pre-reqs should be fairly similar, but I noticed you don’t have discrete math in your schedule so I figured I’d mention it. You’ll probably want a background in proofs/discrete for Cal as well, even if you’ll have to take CS70 after transfer.

And C++ and Java might be redundant to take, if they’re both considered intro to CS they’ll probably be pretty close in material. Is there a reason you’re planning to take both? I would think you’d only need the language your data structures class’ll be taught in. Usually after learning one language it’s pretty easy to pick up other ones, especially if they’re closely related like Java and C++ are.

I also thought about taking three math courses at the same time, but it is not a big deal for me if I get easy teachers for those courses and the music one is an online lecture, so I pretty much think it is doable
(I’m getting As in last two math courses and I never missed 100% on math exams)

Can you guys check the schedule in terms of satisfying IGETC areas? And Area6 part, I don’t need it cause I’m an international(heard that language part is waived for people who graduate higher than middle school from overseas)

@failure622 I have a doubt you really transferred to Cal… because I have some friends in my CC who are studying CS and MOST OF THEM have 3.7 gpa or higher than that, but they don’t think they are eligible to be in Cal…

I know I didn’t put discrete math in my schedule box, but I did due to hella intensive schedule and it is not the priority to transfer

@CStransferrr At this point I’ve graduated from Cal, I transferred two years ago. I was probably towards the lower end of what was accepted, but a 4.0 is not an admissions requirement. Essays and ECs carry a lot of weight in decisions too, which is probably what put me over the edge. I thought Cal was a reach when I applied as well (~3.8 before Fall semester, 3.7ish at the winter update), but in my case it worked out. Again, higher is better for GPA, 4.0 is ideal of course, but just because you don’t have a perfect GPA doesn’t mean you won’t get in.

I would suggest trying to put discrete math in your schedule if you can. A majority of the other UCs have it as a major pre-req and it could seriously affect your chances at them, especially if you’re doubting that you can get into Cal. Otherwise you should double check assist to make sure you’re still in line with your second choice’s requirements.

IGETC varies a little between different CCs. If you don’t trust your counselor and you can’t figure it out for yourself, it would help if you post the name of your school or its IGETC requirements, otherwise we can’t help you too much.

Hello fellow hopeful L&S CS transfer!

As @failure622 noted, taking three math classes is doable, but can be difficult (I took Calc 3, Diff EQ, Linear, and Electromagnetism this past Spring, so I can relate to your dilemma). With that said, it seems like you are a good student with the right mindset to succeed, so I think you have a great shot in pulling off the trifecta!

You seem to be on track to complete IGETC and as much of the available prerequisite courses! If your schedule permits, try to find an equivalent to CS 61C to complete during this coming summer (hint: DVC typically offers an online summer course that articulates as CS 61C ).

Good luck!

Which of the following Berkeley courses does your community college offer equivalents of, according to http://www.assist.org ?

CS 61A (probably only Laney; structure and interpretation of computer programs)
CS 61B (data structures)
CS 61C (probably only Diablo Valley; machine structures)
CS 70 (rare or nonexistent at CCs; discrete math courses will have some overlap)
EE 40 (electronics)
EE 20 (rare or nonexistent at CCs; signals and systems)

@failure In case of Cal, I heard the essay does matter because most of the applicants have almost perfect scores which makes it hard to figure out the eligible students out of a stack of smart students. I guess your essay and ECs worked a lot. What did your essay look like? And maybe I’m gonna take discrete math if I will not be able to transfer in 2yrs cuz it is technically not requirement for Cal, but the concept is so important to CSstudents. I just wanna pack hella requirements for admission in 2years.

@anothertransfer Are you gonna apply on this month? Have you taken CS61C on summer session at Cal or an equivalent course in CC? Was that really hard to pass or it’s doable if doing the best? I can take COMSCI260 class at DVC if I can’t transfer in 2yrs.

If you have access to DVC, it would be a good idea to take both COMSC 210 (= UCB CS 61B) and COMSC 260 (= UCB CS 61C). If you can get to Laney, it would be a good idea to take CIS 61 (= UCB CS 61A).

@ucbalumnus That’s what I’m thinking! I will go to DVC to take 210 and 260
Have you ever taken those classes in the College? How was the difficulty of them?

@CStransferrr Yes, I am applying this application cycle. I took COMPSCI 260 at DVC, and that class is completely doable; so is Laney’s CIS 61, which–as @ucbalumnus noted–articulates as CS 61A.
