Good scholarships for Latina women interested in the STEM field?

not sure what major inside of STEM yet, also preferably for colleges in Texas

Most of the “good scholarships” will come directly from the schools themselves. Have you checked your list of schools?

@nerdygurl343

What was your PSAT score?

Society of Women Engineers. I think the deadline for freshmen is in May.

@sybbie719 @nw2this My list of schools in Texas are Rice, UT Austin, UTSA, U of H, and A&M. My favorites are Rice and UT Austin, but I’m willing to consider these other schools if they can make each year somewhere around 20,000 or less. I’ve price checked UT Austin and Rice and according to my household income among other things I’d be looking at above 22,000 a year. I am a junior, and my PSAT score was in the 98th percentile, 1360 on the new PSAT, and my SI was 209. I am ranked number 6 out of 440 students, with a weighted GPA of 105.52 Thank you @twoinanddone! Would that be the May of my senior year?

@nerdygurl343

You will make National Hispanic Recognition Program (NHRP) which will make you eligible for full ride scholarships at several schools like University of Oklahoma, University of Kentucky, Florida International University, University of Alabama Huntsville and more.

You would be eligible for full tuition scholarships at schools like Arizona State University and University of Kentucky.

TAMU will give you $3.5K per year.

Look for your invitation to apply on March 10.

There is a partial list of NHRP scholarships in this thread:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/hispanic-students/1805958-need-recent-info-for-national-hispanic-scholars-2016-graduates-p2.html

Thank you! @nw2this! I will definitely look into these colleges!

I would encourage you to look at UT Dallas. It is excellent for STEM and awards merit scholarships.

if you have not visited Rice, then try to go. Rice is a terrific school, and you are in the ballpark for admittance.

Correction: I wrote University of Kentucky twice, I meant to say University of Nebraska in the second sentence

You would be eligible for full tuition scholarships at schools like Arizona State University and University of Nebraska.

If you aren’t contacted by March 10, Email them NHRP@scholarshipamerica.org.

You have top stats for University of Pittsburgh with rank and GPA, what was your superscore SAT or ACT? They always seem to like to increase their student diversity so might not hurt to send an application there. What is your intended major?

Here are a few possible options: (my son was awarded one of these and used it at a “meets full need school” which eliminated his work-study, summer contribution)

My kiddos also used this program for app fee waivers, scholarship resources and other membership benefits ( no cost):

http://www.venturescholar.org/hs/index.html

“The Ventures Scholars Program is a national membership program designed to help underrepresented and first-generation college-bound students interested in pursuing math- and science-based careers link to information, resources, and opportunities that will help them successfully pursue their career goals.”

You do not need to be a URM AND a first gen, rather you can be one or the other and still qualify.

Hope this helps.

Kat

Thank you very much @katwkittens ! I’ve only taken the SAT once, and haven’t taken the ACT test yet, but I plan on taking both again. My SAT score from tenth grade was 2040, with a 770 in writing. @mommdc I’m not too sure about my major yet, though. Thank you, @txstella ! I will definitely look into UT Dallas, I’ve visited Rice but not while it was in session.

NCWIT (National Center for Women in Information Technology) has a scholarship program. It isn’t STEM, but MENSA gives out scholarships, too (and you don’t have to be a member).

However, some schools will reduce your need based aid by the amount of outside scholarships. And the best scholarships are usually from the colleges themselves.

As a former national winner of the NCWIT high school award – NCWIT does not have a scholarship program. If you win the award, you may receive a scholarship at a partner school.

If you win the National award, you get $500 in cash. I guess that could count as a scholarship, but in reality that covers your taxes on the award. Every few years a board member will choose a National cohort to award $1000 (non-renewable) to each National winner (35 girls) – the last time that happened was 2014 (my cohort).

Once you get your scores check these out.

Lots of TX schools on the lists.
