We all know that like a 1600 is good (on the old SAT exam), but what is considered a good/great score by most colleges (let’s not get specific on the college, since there are so many)? Maybe percentile might be better?

Hm. Depends on what your standards are.

For a state school, usually 1200 will do it. (Yeah, I know, some of them are WAY harder.)

For a mid level college, prolly 1250-1350.

And ivies anywhere up there.

So, IMO, a 1300 is GREAT, generally speaking.

Look at the 50% SAT ranges published by the schools or available in the college guides. If you are non-ED, non-URM, non-legacy, non-international student, non-development case, and non-VIP, then you have to be near the top of the 50% range to be a strong candidate at the school. For example, if the 50% SAT range is 1300-1500, then you need to be around 1450. With a reasonable hook, people with 1400 are probably being accepted.

This is just my personal opinion...
1100+ respectable
1200+ good score
1250+ very good score
1300+ very intelligent
1350+ among the brightest
1400+ phenomenal
1500+ the best

For college confidential...
1100- you suck
1200- bad score
1300- mediocre
1350- acceptable
1400- retake
1450- sort of satisfied
1500- good
1550- great
1600- impressive
lol.

lol how come 1400 is "retake" but 1350 is "acceptable"

Just remember that national average is just over 1000.

because the ppl with 1400 still got potential and meh lol i dono >_>

Haha...I like how uvajoe answered my question the best. That is what I was kind of looking for: both in the eyes of reality and CC. :-D

you're right 1350- and 1400- should be switched. sorry.

uvajoe - Love your list - LOL! Care to try same for GPA? :)

Ha

The problem though is that GPA varies from school to school

3.7 at a top boarding school is probably more favorable than a 4.0+ at a lesser known private or public school

im pretty sure the white national average is over 1000, but the overall national overage is in the 900s

not speaking "cc", 1350ish and plus is good

UW gpa For CC:

3.5- Dumbest person in your HS
3.6- Community College bound!
3.7- might get into a third tier.
3.8- not TOO dumb.
3.9- well your a DECENT student
3.99- that one A- is going to KILL my chances.
4.0- i guess it has to be good.

"3.99- that one A- is going to KILL my chances."

LOL yeah, read the "what are my chances" threads for proof. haha.

mmmfff. I was happy with my 1400. Until I found this website. Will be retaking it this fall and going for 1500. Hahaha I want to get beyond "sort of satisfied"

I think the ideal score is whatever you can envision yourself being capable of. If that is a 1200/1600, so be it. If it is a 1600/1600, so be it.

The best score is the score that you need in order to be accepted to the school that you want to go to. If you define that school as the most prestigious school that you can get into, then ...

I think 1200 is the minimum acceptable score. It's just a nice, round number for a cutoff. If you score under 1200, you're a moron. I consider over 1200 good, over 1300 very good, over 1400 amazing, and over 1500 to be in the child prodigy category.

A good SAT score is what you make of it. As previous posters have said, everyone has his/her own abilities and a good score for one might be a mediocre score for another. The most important thing is to recognize your own limitations and aim for a good score within your reach - that way, you won't wind up shorthanded.

Of course, the age at which you take it plays a role too...I got an "acceptable" 1350...

...in 7th grade :p
