Good Summer Job for Smart Students

Okay not to sound too snobbish or llike bragging or anything, but I am a pretty good student in school. I want to get a job in the summer. I don't want to work at like McDonalds or anything like that, but a good job. Do you guys have any ideas. I want something that would be good to work at.

how old are you?

i'm a smart student but i work at the local grocery store. i think everyone should experience a job like that. it may be slumming for you and your genius mind, but o well.

Make your own business. Duh.

If you are smart you should apply your smartness to finding the job. Why resort to asking us, poor dumb people?

I'm not sure businesses care about your SAT scores or how many AP classes you are taking. I don't have much experience in the summer job industry but from what I've heard from friends it seems like getting a job depends on who you know or how desperate a business is. Maybe you can try Barnes and Noble though I'm not sure they hire teenagers.

Yeah I am at the top of my class, but have spent several summers working at a local amusement park doing trivial jobs....but money is money.

How about the FBI?

I understand where you are coming from. You want an above level job. However, businesses do not solely care on your academic performance. They can about your experience and knowledge in the area. Don't be afraid to go for a low level and work your way up next year.

HOWEVER, it is possible to get a very good job if you have expertise in one area. I taught at a computer workshop for autisitc children affliated with CMU. Look for oppportunties like that Or an internship.

Cure cancer.

right now I'm working in a chain restaurant (not fast food- I couldn't do that). but I really do think it's good to experience. it makes me remember exactly why college is so important.

Okay can we stop with the jokes and sarcasm? Seriously I was asking a serious question. If you don't have something nice to say don't say it at all.

I'm new to the working world so I was wondering if those were the only jobs avaliable or like any other good jobs.

So what I learned is that I may have to take a minor job, but like logisticslord said money is money.

Try and get an internship, other than that you're gonna have a hard time. Unless you have connections.

Try craigslist

Go do some research.
(But be warned that you probably won't get too much money out of it, if any.)

Be careful when looking on craigslist. I use to do that, and I did get hired for several jobs that were listed. But as a minor, make sure you don't endanger yourself since you don't really know if the people offering jobs are creditable people.

I work at a restaurant, and even though it may not be the most intelectually engaging job, it really is an invaluable experience. Just because you won't be researching something doesn't mean it won't be hard work.

And yeah, I do some advertising on craigslist, and I'd say only about 10% of leads follow through. So yeah it's a bit of a pain, I guess the newspaper classifieds would be better just because people are actually paying for ads there.

Either way, it's your attitude that'll end up being your problem. No matter how smart you are, or whether once you get out of college you'll be making millions or be president or whatever, you're a high school student right now, and even if you're taking AP Physics you really don't know much. If it's money you want, you'll "settle for" an entry level job, and if it's and educational experience you're looking for you can probably find an unpaid internship somewhere.

whenever I'm going to post in a thread i read all the posts before mine. After reading nate's i wind up not having anything unique or better to say. =(

I would say try and find an internship. They would be best. Other than that look into finding a job at a store that you like so you can enjoy your employee discount. ;)

Where would be a good place to look for an internship? (like what types of businesses generally have them available for teens)

im smart and I work at Brusters
