Good Ways to Memorize Spanish Words/Rules?

Currently a freshman, who has Spanish 2 as one of their courses, and I’d like to know some helpful/simple tips in making the vocabulary words and rules stick in my head for a long period of time. I struggle a lot whenever I wright Spanish essays(We do it a lot, since it’s Honors) and I usually get B’s; hence I don’t feel proud about it due to the fact that I mainly use my Spanish 1 knowledge and don’t use Spanish 2 that much. I can never seem to remember every word, from the chapter we’re covering, and also not be able to remember(Like the rules we learn along the way) to make my writing stand out more. Therefore, I use my basic knowledge of Spanish, and never get the A I want. Now, I do study for a few hours before each written/oral exam, but I forget after neglecting it for atleast a few hours! On another note, let’s not even get started with the Oral exams…since it’s so FREAKING hard for me to form sentences in my mind, which makes me use common words such as: “gracias”, “de nada” from Spanish 1, creating words, instead of sentences, in a very broken-like Spanish manner. This is obviously because the Spanish rules haven’t sunk into my mind yet, as well as the vocab. I’ve figured out this much: No matter how long I try and memorize Spanish, it’ll all be in vein at the end… The reason why I know a lot of Spanish 1, is because it’s very simplistic and not as complicated as Spanish 2, except for the vocabulary. I personally thought that the vocab from Spanish 1 is way easier to understand than Spanish 2’s. At the end of the day, not going to take Spanish 3, just screw it. I’d rather take another class which could potentially benefit me, instead of coping with this unnecessary stress.

TL;DR: Any way for me to know all the words and rules very quickly, instead of spending like 4+ hours on it? I have other subjects, I don’t want to invest ALL my time into this class, which I’m not interested in at all.

Some reasonable issues?

-I never speak in Spanish outside of school.
-I study the night before major tests/quizes, never everyday.
-I tend to rush when memorizing
-I don’t callaborate with others during class, in fear of myself butchering Spanish.

Tried flashcards? Do a couple rounds through your set every night and you’ll have the words down in no time.

It’s old school, but I’m a big fan of the flashcard approach. The act of writing it down on flashcards helps the process, too. Easy to shuffle through them when you have a few minutes here and there - no matter where you might be. I used to do it at red lights in traffic. haha. And you can move the ones you know into a “know it” pile. Kind of rewarding in its own little way.

As far as study habits, you need to get into a pattern. Set a time every day for 15-20 minutes one or more times per day and flip through the vocal and grammar. Every day review is important. Long term retention isn’t aided by cramming for a test or quiz at the last minute. Once you have more confidence from more regular efforts, you’ll feel less self-conscious about collaborating in class.

Your post here reflects the fact that this bothers you and you want to do better. Work on disciplining yourself a little and things will click into place.

Quizlet is your friend

I agree with everyone else that flashcards are the way to go, but on top of studying for a set amount of time every day, try to squeeze in the flashcards every now and then for extra practice. (On the way to school, while eating breakfast, during tv commercials etc.)
