Google campus in Irvine?

On the Google internship website, they say that they offer software internships at the campus in Irvine. Google is where I ultimately want to work so having an opportunity for internships is very important for me. Now I know that Google is very selective and hard to get into for anyone and that it is hard to get an internship no matter where you go. However, does anyone know whether UCI receives any preference from Google when they are selecting internships?

In the Google Irvine campus, Google does give some preference for internships due to proximity. I know a handful of friends that got interviews at the Irvine branch which is as far as any preference will get you. From there, you’re on your own!

If you want to get connected to Google, the best way to do it is by staying well connected in the organizations in the EECS and ICS department. IEEE@UCI has contacts with the branch (we invited and personally met the director of the whole branch at a networking banquet we held!). Also, earlier this year, a group of IEE and ICS Student Council students toured the Google campus.

On a side note, Google has not recruited from the job fairs in a very long time. It might be difficult to get an internship/job at the headquarters especially with this economy.
