Not sure if there is a previous thread on this subject, but here goes -
I am a current junior looking to apply to a few top business schools next fall. I just recieved a 32 composite (32E, 32R, 33S, 30M) on the ACT in April. Today I got back my writing score and I received a perfect 12 on it. I’m curious as to how much this writing score impacts college admission decisions at top non-ivy league schools (i.e. Georgetown, USC, NYU, CMU, Vanderbilt), considering that for many of these schools, the writing test is not a requirement. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!!
Your writing score is definitely not as important as your composite score. Try retaking the exam for gaining extra competitiveness for the schools you have mentioned.
Your score won’t help that much (compared to your composite), so I suggest taking the test again. However, your score indicates that you have some serious writing skills. Put a lot of effort and passion into your college essays and I think you’ll do fine with admissions.
@viphan@ARandomGeek Thank you for the help! Isn’t the ACT writing equivalent to an SAT subject test to many college admission officers? Also, what do you suggest I get my composite up to for the schools mentioned? Will 33 or 34 make me that much more competitive?
No, your writing portion on ACT is regarded same as SAT writing portion. Subject tests are completely different story. A 34+ will make you competitive for those schools.
@viphan
A bit late, but I will be attending the University of Alabama this fall. As your profile picture has changed to Duke I assume you have changed your loyalties a bit!
