Got a D in a class...

So I've been checking my grades so far for the semester as they have been coming in. I took 5 courses this semester, only two of which I really needed for my degree, plus taking two online math courses. The two classes I needed to pass I did great in (A in film and B+ in golf) but now the grades for the three classes I didn't need and were solely electives (Business Management, Keyboarding and Journalism & Democracy). The grade just came in for Journalism & Democracy and it's a D. I will admit that I didn't really put too much effort toward the class outside of it because I was really just there to listen and the class itself was boring as hell. At my school a D is still passing (I got a D in biology a few semesters back and it hasn't effected me at all), but I'm just a little worried since this is in my major it might be worse in the long-term. Will an elective that I didn't really need but still in my major hurt me at all in the long run?

I should point out that even though this was a class in my major, I only took the class to gain more credits for a full-time semester. I had taken everything I need to gain my degree except for physical education (golf) and fine art (film) and two math courses. This is showing up on my transcript solely as an elective and doesn’t even count toward my elective credits since I filled that quota two semesters ago.

What are your plans? If you want to go to grad school it might hurt unless you re-take it and get a better grade. I say that because they ask for transcripts. A lot of companies don’t really care about transcripts, just your GPA.

I had a tough first semester my freshmen year and got an F in a class for my major. Even though I retook the class they couldn’t replace the F with a B+ because I failed an intensive version of the class the first time and passed the regular so they weren’t the same course. However, I still got into a top grad school program in my discipline. Do you have enough room in your schedule to retake it?
