Got a F my junior year, can I still get into a UC?

Hi all.
During my junior year I had some serious family problems and I got a F in both semesters of precalculus. I’ve maintained a very good GPA throughout high school with 4.0s my freshman and sophomore years. I have done many extra curriculars and I think my personal statements were fairly good. Anyways, I made up the second semester that I failed for precalc. So I basically have 1 F in first semester and 1 F in second semester (I made it up and got a B). Just wanted to know what my chances are. Has anyone ever got in with a F? And my senior year grades are very good.

Thanks!

The UC’s have strict policies about admissions requirements, which includes passing all required A-G courses. However it is still possible to get into a UC with their admission by exception policy which is explained here: http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/freshman/requirements/admission-by-exception/index.html

And since you say you made up the grade with a B, I think that negates the F’s you received in terms of admissions requirements, but I’m sure that the failed courses will still be taken into consideration when they are reviewing your application.

Good luck!

Hi! Precalc isn’t an a-g requirement, so it’s technically going beyond the math credit I need at my school, so hopefully they’ll also take that into consideration, but thanks!

You have to report the F grades on your UC application, but you also report the repeat grade B. The UC’s have grade validation, meaning that if you pass the 2nd semester with a C or higher, your 1st semester is validated for that course. Also passing a higher level Math class (Calculus) will validate the Pre-calc course. If your school reports semester grades however, your F from 1st semester will still be used in your UC GPA calculation. If you only get 1 final grade for the course, then the B will be used.
