I'm a transfer student that was accepted into Stony Brook, but I've decided to take classes at my local university for another year because of financial reasons, and then reapply to Stony Brook for the fall of '10. Should I write a letter to the university thanking them for the opportunity, but that I don't plan on attending for the fall of 09? I just don't want to not say anything, and then reapply for the next school year and have them reject me because I took up a seat that another student could have had..

Good question. First, if you don’t plan to enroll… yes, please let us know. E-mail us at enroll@stonybrook.edu.

Second, be aware that we don’t automatically defer admission to future semesters. You’ll need to reapply, and we’ll look at any updated grades you might have by then. I don’t mean to be intimidating about it, but I did want to make that point clear. Previous applications really have no bearing on future applications, for the most part, because your educational situation will have changed.
