Got accepted to binghamton university, YAY me. However, I would like some real advice before I make any definite decisions between now and May.

I have a few options.

Either I take 3 more classes over the summer to obtain my associate degree at current college (note- will have to spend 1k+ on those 3 summer classes), transfer to baruch college, will take in all my credits, and stay in the city for the rest of my undergrad feeding off government financial aid.

OR...

Transfer to Binghamton, live off loans, may stay an extra yr ( they only accept around 30 of my 55 credits from current college), experience the residential life, etc.

My only concern is money and the social aspect of my life. I come from a very low income family with a single parent providing us roof over our heads ( my brothers and I). If I decide to go to binghamton, my mother won't put in a penny for my tuition. As for the social aspect, living in NYC all my life gets a bit dull, many college students around my current school don't interact much and just go about their day. I can envision baruch being the same. I can't speak for those at a university, but I feel their experience is much more lively.

I direly want to get out of the city, but I need someone to shed some light on me.
Binghamton, I only get pell-4k-5k a year, tap maybe 4k so around 9k, and total cost of tuition (books, housing etc included)=18k. Where will I be able to get another 9k?

Feel free to post your experiences/feelings with both or one of these colleges, I'll love to listen.

I’m a transfer student from NYC as well however my I am transferring from another SUNY school. I completely understand your situation. I wanted to get out of the city and live the college experience. I have to say that my decision was well worth it. Getting out of the city and living on your own is a completely different experience you wont learn from attending a CUNY.

My suggestion? Take the leap of faith and go to Bing. A friend of mine with alright grades got into Binghamton from Bronx Science and only has to pay about $1k from what I remember out of his own pockets. He has a loan for $2k and the rest is covered by some kind of aid. From what I know Bing is helpful with those who need financial aid.

You need to take responsibility. You can’t find the 9k? Apply for scholarships, work-study, maybe even EOP. There are tons of opportunities for students like you, it’s up to you to take initiative.

With that being said, go to Bing and seek financial help yourself. You can definitely do it.

As for my financial issue, I search through scholarship websites like collegeboard & any are already past due. I am not eligible for eop because I wasn’t register for it when I first enter college. I’ll continue looking any if anyone can provide useful sites, I’ll appreciate it very much.
