Got into my first choice school but...

...I can't pay for it. So what happened was that I initially did not apply for FA when I was completing my application, but I soon realized that my dad's company recently had reduced its trade scale by a significant amount due to recession and there's no way in heaven our family could pay $60k an year now. So my question is: Would I be able to apply for FA in the 2010-2011 year if I defer my enrollment for an year? Has anyone ever done this or known anyone who has done it?

FYI, I'm an international student, and I'll be matriculating to University of Chicago.

well, are you going (to your 1st choice school, if not UofC)?

I think it is very difficult for international students to get financial aid. The first thing to do might be to call Chicago and ask their finanicial aid office both the question you asked here AND if they offer significant aid to international applicants. Finally, it is possible that you could still fill out an application for aid and get some.

So call the FA office at Chicago.

[University of Chicago College Admissions | Financial Aid for International Applicants](http://collegeadmissions.uchicago.edu/admissions/international/aid.shtml)

good link.

Don’t know if I can quote from the website but here is the relevant part…

International students are only eligible for financial aid if they apply for support during the admissions process. If you think that you will need financial aid at any point during your four years at the College, you should apply for financial aid when you apply for admission.

Schools like Chicago that are not need blind for internationals admit using different standards for those not needing aid and those needing it. It will be very hard to get aid from them at this stage.
