So I got accepted into UCLA with some scholarship money, but I'm hearing of this trend of people being accepted into UCLA tend to get rejected from Berkeley. So now it's got me on edge, and Berkeley is my number one choice. Not to mention being waitlisted at UCSD. Now I consider myself extremely lucky to have been admitted into UCLA considering my stats. Regardless, I'm curious on the kind of emphasis that Berkeley puts on their application review process versus UCLA? Feel free to ask for some info on me if you like to judge me as an applicant.

You’ll know in three days, there’s no use freaking out about it now. Take a deep breath, try to focus on other things, and if you end up at UCLA instead of berkeley you’ll be perfectly fine.

Why are so many hs students freaking out about this now? What could anyone on the internet possibly tell you that will give you a better chance of getting in now? Just calm down, you’ll know soon enough!

I’m studying at Berkeley L&S CS right now, and I was waitlisted UCSD (eventually denied because they didn’t accept anyone off their waitlist apparently), and rejected from UCLA, but was accepted by Berkeley.

I never expected to get into Berkeley. I was told I had like a 10% chance based on my stats, but I still got in.

Sorry! I’m just really nervous! But you guys are right. I’d honestly be happy being at UCLA. They gave a good bit of money that makes things more affordable for my parents.

Were you an out-of-state applicant though? But that’s definitely nice to hear that it’s possible to make it into somewhere that you didn’t expect. I’ve just heard around the forum that there’s a lot of times when kids who get into UCLA are rejected from Berkeley and those who get into Berkeley tend to be rejected from UCLA. So I assumed that their admissions just simply look at different aspects more than others.

@AsianAlly Is your scholarship Regents? If it’s need-based, then it doesn’t have that much bearing to your UCB chance.

“Those who get into Berkeley tend to be rejected from UCLA”, um no. “Tend to” makes it sound like it happens often, it doesn’t happen often at all, it just sometimes happens due to chance. There are definitely more students who are accepted to UCLA and rejected from Cal than vice versa, but this has nothing to do with you! Just because certain people get into one and not the other doesn’t mean you can’t get into both.

Yeah it’s need-based. And I know, I just through that in there because I was happy that I got some extra money. If it weren’t for that little boost of cash, I wouldn’t be able to attend UCLA. Well… I’m assuming that it’s need-based. It’s the UCLA Achievement Scholarship.

Sorry! Just the nerves and curiosity!

@AsianAlly
You have a good chance if you got the Achievement Scholarship. Good luck!

Don’t be sorry! Everyone is nervous, you’ll know very soon, no use freaking out about it now.

4 years ago, my older son got into UCLA, got the “achievement scholarship” (which I always kind of felt was just putting a name to his need-based financial aid) and he was admitted for Spring at Berkeley. He is graduating from UCLA. My younger son, last year, was wait-listed at UCLA (and eventually admitted) and got the Regents Scholarship at Berkeley. He is a freshman at Berkeley.

Thanks you all for the positive reinforcement! Honestly, it’s very calming. And I’ll try not to get my hopes up too much! Believe me when I say that I feel very blessed have been admitted into UCLA and all of the other UCs (waitlisted at UCSD though…) as an out-of-state applicant and even with very low test scores (1820 SAT 26 ACT)! And the scholarships are also quite the blessing too!

Hey I’m in the same position as you. Idk but I’m an oos applicant so i didn’t really expect to get into ucla but I did. Is there any similarity in terms of how they view your application. Like you have stated for yourself uc Berkeley is my #1 choice but ucla is completely fine as well lol I just want Berkeley more .

@2018dad Hi quick question about the achievement scholarship? So if you got the email a few days ago that your scholarship application for the achievement award was still under consideration …is that a good sign for admission?

@purple4
For UC Berkeley, it could be good news.

I GOT ACCEPTED INTO BERKELEY!!!
