Got rescinded from UC Irvine!!!

Dear Admissions Office,

I am requesting a reconsideration of the decision of my offer of admission to UC Irvine. I fully understand and regret that I have not fulfilled the conditions stated in the freshman contract, but I would like to urge you to reconsider the withdrawal of my admission. I received a D in the second semester of English 9(Language Art 1) course from Apex, I don’t mean to make excuses for the poor grade I received, but I would like to explain the circumstances.
I am a student who came from a foreign country two and half years ago. In order to fulfill UC requirement for English courses, I had to make up my freshman year English class. I could only unlock the following units or finish the writing assignments when I attended Saturday classes. And the tests and writings would be locked so that I couldn’t work at home.
When I reached to a D in my last class, I asked my high school counselor if this grade could affect my admission. I was told that English 9 class would be inserted into freshman year, which means it would not affect my admission. That is also why I didn’t notify the school about getting a D in English 9 before. My counselor’s advice led me to concentrate more on the AP exams. I had many schedule conflicts with the class because many Saturday AP practice exams which are mandatory in my school. The district refused to give me the chance to finish all my tests and writings for that class which could improve my grade because the classes were over.
Though I got a D in English 9, I maintained my GPA above 3.0. I ended up passing all my AP tests and scoring 4 on two tests. My AP results indicate that I didn’t stop pursuing my academic goals after I got admitted to UC Irvine. In the past two and half years, I overcame many difficulties in order to get an offer from my dream school UC Irvine. I believed that my previous academic records show how hard I worked for reaching my goal.
I already registered an English 9 class which is approved by UCs. I will start retaking the class next week in order to fulfill the requirements. Please give me the chance to make up this credit. I will finish the class as soon as possible.
I would like to urge you to consider reinstating me under my special situation of the English class. I will work the hardest to reach my academic success in UC Irvine if I get readmitted. I have dreamed of studying in UC Irvine since I first came to this country. I look forward to hearing back from the admissions office. Thank you!

Can someone indicate the awkward sentences and typos I have? Thank you so much!!! I really appreciate all the help!

If you read the provisional admissions information along with what you need to do after you apply on the UC website, you are required to notify the UC’s of any D or F grade. If you had notified UCI prior to them receiving your final transcript, they may have been more understanding and allowed to you retake the course this summer.

Again, I understand that you are a student and was relying on your counselor to give you the correct information, but it is also your responsibility to make sure that you understand the admission process. At this point you have nothing to lose, so clean up the typos and send in your appeal. I would also contact your counselor and let them know that there guidance was faulty and has put you into this difficult situation.

Can you help to indicate the typos I have? Thank you so much for your advice!!! @Gumbymom

Did the following things really happen?

  1. Counselor advised not to worry about the D grade and not to notify UCI.
  2. The district refused to give me the chance to finish all my tests and writings...

Yeah I asked my counselor and she said I wouldn’t need to worry about it.The district wouldn’t allow to take the class when it passed the last day of the class @coolweather

@linyong. See my PM.

The following things will raise questions: AP exams ended in early May. Swimming competitions ended when? Did your school end in June? You still had 3, 4 weeks to study for your English class, right?

recision, not decision.
Spacing issue after “English 9” and it is probably language arts (not art).

“Reached to a d”?? What does that mean?

Don’t blame your counselor. Even if you got bad advice

Many scheduling conflicts

you need a comma by your AP classes, and there are other sentences that are long-winded, and need either to have punctuation or should be shortened or deleted.

Cut the repetitious " dream school UC Irvine.

Reword the clunky sentence about the “special circumstance”

And you registered FOR an English 9 class

Can you talk to your counselor to see if he/she can do something for you now?

You must talk to the admissions office at UCI. Ideally, someone from your school needs to intervene on your behalf. If you are near UCI, I suggest you go tomorrow and hand your letter in person. Ask to speak with an admissions counselor. No one here can fix this problem. You need to find out if UCI will accept a summer English course from you.

Ok thank you! @Lindagaf

I tried to talk to my counselor but she is still in vacation @coolweather

Hand the letter to them AFTER fixing all the typos and cleaning it up, of course.

Swim season ends around May 5 in California.

I would try to set up an in-person meeting with an admissions representative if I were you. Honestly, that is your best bet if you live close by.

I do not know if there is a nice way to say this, but your writing makes it look like you really should have paid more attention to and put more effort into your English courses.

As I understand it, your coursework needs to be completed before you graduate, before the summer, in order for a UC or CSU to accept it. So your retaking this English class now may not be good enough. However, you should do it anyway, and you should send this letter to UC Irvine. You have nothing to lose by trying for this. But know that this may not work. You need to make a backup plan for the fall, and if your goal is to graduate from a UC or CSU, that’s a community college.

Although you should continue to hope for UC Irvine, you need to apply to the local community college this weekend, and add them to your FAFSA. Then register for classes as soon as they let you. Many of the ccs in CA are overenrolled, so you really need to be on top of this if you want to start there in the fall.

Or the OP can take a gap year and start over. Or the OP can see what colleges still have space available on the NACAC a list, assuming they will let her complete her English requirement this summer.

My daughter is a dyslexic who is on a year round swim team. If practices interfered with her education, we wouldn’t have permitted her to continue with the team. I don’t really understand what you’re basing your appeal on. “Scheduling conflicts”? If I worked at the college I’d ask you to clarify exactly what was so important that it took precedence over English class. I wouldn’t consider skipping class to attend swim practice a legitimate conflict. If the AP course time created a conflict, I’d want yo know that you made your district aware so they could help you resolve it. Did you do that?

Well, the OP is in good company with the other 498 students whose admission to UCI was rescinded.
