Goucher rd 2014

Who applied?

My daughter did. Hasn’t heard yet as they are waiting on mid term transcripts.

My son applied. He’s interested in doing a music/IR double major.

Felixnot–I was assuming we wouldn’t hear anything for at least another month. Does Goucher send out decisions earlier than most schools?

I think a college will send an acceptance when they’ve made a decision, especially the smaller schools that want to secure their class. Goucher isn’t our daughter’s first choice, (she has already been accepted by her first choice), but we would like to know all her options before sending in a check!

I just heard that a classmate of my son’s got her acceptance today–anybody else?

I got accepted today with a $50,000 Global Citizen Scholarship!

Sarah, Congrats!

Our son also got his acceptance today.

I got accepted Friday, also with a Global Citizen.

Just wondering…

accepted w/ global citizen. Waiting for the package tho.

I would say, ask again in 3 weeks or so when all the acceptances and aid packages are in. It’s a definite possibility for my son, depending on how everything shakes out.

D is not. She got accepted to AU and Northeastern last week so that took Goucher off the short list.

S got accepted yesterday, 40K Global Citizen

S got a postcard today. On one side is a photo of six happy, smiling students in a dorm room, with a caption saying “It’s time to call Goucher home.”

On the reverse side – the side with S’s address and the postmark – is information about receptions in various cities throughout the U.S. (including our city) “to meet you in person and answer questions about our innovative education and close-knit community.”

Right before this information is the following sentence, in very small type (well, it’s almost all in very small type, because it’s a postcard): “Congratulations on your admission to Goucher College!”

That is how we found out that S has been admitted!

I guess if nothing else shows up in tomorrow’s mail, it will be time for a call to Admissions to confirm that S has, in fact, been admitted. I hope it’s not a mistake!

That’s funny, SodiumFree–we just got that postcard today, after getting the “fat envelope” on Saturday, and it occurred to me immediately that this was cutting things awfully close, and if any of the fat envelopes got held up in transit, people might very well get the postcard first. Sure enough…

My son is a freshman and just loves Goucher! Go to Accepted Applicant’s Day if you can. It was April 6th last year. I haved posted on other threads; many of them last spring. Any questons, I’ll be happy to try to answer. Best of luck to everyone!

Well, we finally got the admission packet today. (It appears the original packet was lost in the mail, so a duplicate was mailed out the day before yesterday.)

My current frustration is that we cannot access FASTS, the online Financial Aid Student Tracking System, to find out whether S has been awarded any financial aid. (With another son in college, this is important to us!) We followed the instructions included in the admission packet, but were not able to log on. Instead, we got a message saying “We are unable to activate your account. Please contact your financial aid office and refer to Code IA.”

Anyone else have a similar problem? I of course phoned and emailed the Financial Aid office, but their voicemail says they are closed today. I guess I will just have to be patient (again) and wait until next week to find out about possible financial aid. It’s kind of maddening!

LongeyeMom, I have never visited Goucher and I actually applied to it on a whim, but now I’m seriously considering attending. How is the school in terms of facilities, campus vibe, and proximity to restaurants and stores in general? Thanks!

Lee1710, I’m not LongeyeMom, but just from our visit I can answer a few of these questions. One of the cool things about Goucher’s setting is that for a suburban campus, you kind of have the best of both worlds. The campus itself is large for such a small college, very lush and green, with big old trees everywhere. While you’re there, it feels like you could be way out in the country. But once you step off campus you’re just a couple of blocks from a busy commercial area with lots of malls, restaurants, etc. The nearest shopping is probably a 15-minute walk away.

As for facilities, my son is a musician so we were mostly focusing on the arts facilities, which looked very nice–we were particularly impressed by the clean acoustics of the fairly new performance space that’s in the same building (or group of buildings) as the admissions office. The dorm room we saw looked pleasant, not huge but not too cramped, and we were impressed by the description of the dining and laundry facilities for what that’s worth.

We visited in the summer so it’s hard to read a whole lot about campus vibe, but certainly the place has a friendly, accepting feel to it. I would say “relaxed,” but that has a connotation of low energy, which didn’t fit what we encountered. More like high energy with low anxiety, so to speak.

As you can tell, we loved the place, and so did our son. Honestly, if it wasn’t 500 miles from home, I think it would be at or near the top of his list.
