Governor's School and PSAT

Hey guys,
I was one of many people in our school asked to apply to a Gov School. After reading all the applications, our school will then pick the two best applicants per each school (Science and Engineering). I’m pretty nervous because now I basically have to go through TWO application processes- one for my school and then the actual one. I’m planning on applying for the Science School. I’m just a little nervous about my PSAT. When I took it Sophomore year, I got a score in the 1500s and was pretty confident, but I just got my Junior scores back and my score went down to in the high 1400s. It’s disappointing, but I’m more worried about if this is good enough for Gov School. A lot of kids applying to gov school in my school got around this score, give or take about 30 points. How much weight does the PSAT have for gov school? Do you think my school will still consider me a good applicant if my other factors outweigh the others? I have a high SAT score and science/math extracurriculars

Thanks for any help

It is too bad that your school weeds out Gov School applicants. I wonder why that is? Maybe your state limits applicants that way. But anyone with interest and motivation should be able to apply. Not sure about the weight PSAT is given. Good luck!

Thank you! Yes, well we’re only allowed nominees per school (Science and Engineering), so I guess our school just is trying to raise its image by choosing who they think is most likely to be accepted based on our applications

Do you have to be asked to apply? My school approaches no one about this lol

I think it depends from school to school. Anyone who fits the eligibility requirements is able to apply, but I know for NJ schools have a limit on the number of nominees they can choose, so I would def talk to your guidance counselor if you’re interested.

I was nominated to apply for Governor’s School in the Sciences as well! My school also conducts an application process prior to the actual one you submit to the program. I don’t believe SAT scores are factored into your acceptance to Gov School, so having a high score would not necessarily benefit you in the application process. I would say that your standardized test score (PSAT) should be decent, and as it is in the high 1400s, you should be fine . You just have to have a score that will make yourself competitive to be selected, and then your transcript, essays, and extracurriculars will be looked at by the “admissions counsel.”

Update: I was selected from my school as one of the two applicants to apply. TY for all the help guys

Update: just got the email that I was accepted into the program this year. Thanks a lot guys!
