Hello! I am a new Sophomore, just starting my Sophomore year about a week ago.
In freshman year, I thought it would be cool to be a "popular kid" and not care about my grades.
I took all advanced classes, and finished with a GPA of 3.9 and a rank of 179/1586. My school does weighted GPA.
I have realized what my future means to me, and have been really reflecting upon myself.
In Sophomore year, I am taking:

Pre-AP Advanced Orchestra (4.5)
Pre-AP Art (4.5)
AP World History (5.0)
Pre-AP/IB/Humanities English (4.5)
Pre-Ap Spanish 3 (4.5)
Pre-Ap Algebra 2 (4.5)
Pre-Ap Chemistry (4.5)

These are the highest in each subject I can possibly get. My school does not offer more than one AP class to Sophomore students.

In Junior Year I will be taking:

AP Advanced Orchestra (5.0)
AP US History (5.0)
AP Biology (5.0)
AP Physics (5.0)
AP/Humanities English 3 (5.0)
Pre-AP Pre-Cal (4.5)
and another AP Art class (I'm not sure which one though) (5.0)

In Senior Year I will be taking:

AP Calculus AB (5.0)
AP Chemistry (5.0)
AP Advanced Orchestra (5.0)
AP Economics (5.0)
AP Government (5.0)
AP/Humanities English 4 (5.0)
another AP Art class (5.0)

With these classes, and I am definitely ready to devote and study for them. I am done trying to be popular, as my future is so much more important to me. But with these classes, will i be able to graduate in the top 10? 1-10/1586. I don't even need Valedictorian, I just need to be top 10. Please help me! I think I'm coming down with depression from all this+extracurriculars (Piano, Orchestra, Volunteering). Also, if it seems impossible, then I am willing to take AP Spanish(5.0) throughout Junior and Senior year. Will that make it possible? Please let me know! Thank you in advance for all of your help!

I think you just need to be in the top 10% to apply to top school. It’s not you have to be in the top 10 no matter how many students there are. But yeah, take those classes and don’t fail. We are all depressed because we are being overworked.

We have an AP orchestra weighted class for those who want to do music theory. I know it sounds outrageous, but it’s real. I know you can be in top 10%, that’s not hard to raise to, but I would really like to be in top 10, so could someone please help me by letting me know if I can make it with those classes?

Wow 6000 Students? Is your school Wayne manor?

Anyway, you have the right idea with your classes. If you really want to get ahead you can sort of cheat the system(some may say it’s playing it smart) and take online AP classes/classes over the summer during your sophomore/junior summer.

My school doesn’t let you take AP classes online, only classes that you failed or pre-requisites for other classes. I don’t know how to calculate GPA, but on some other people’s posts I see people doing that for them using future classes, so if I were to calculate my GPA theoretically with these classes could I get into the top 10 rankings by the time I graduate? I go Allen High School in Texas by the way.

Your class-rank is not just dependent of how well you do in school, but how well you do in comparison with all of your other classmates as well.

Since you only need to go down 20-40 ranks for the top 10%, just getting As with a minute amount of Bs should get you to your goal.

It’s possible, but honestly doubtful due to the fact that the top ten right now are probably going to work just as hard or harder in order to keep their spot.

You don’t need to obsess over being in the top 10 considering your class size. Just make sure you within the top 10% or 5% which I believe is doable and you’ll be fine for even the most elite colleges.

Top 10 people? Probably not, as the current top 10 will probably work as hard or harder than they did last year to keep those spots.

Top 10%? Definitely; just put a lot of hard work in over the next three years, but don’t forget that it’s okay to have some fun (LEGALLY as criminal records will be a bigger issue for colleges than rankings and GPAs) as you’re only young once. Also don’t forget to have safety schools just in case applying to top colleges goes south.

Thank you! Is it really impossible? I’m taking more classes then half of the top 10 right now, and doing well in them too. I know it’s only the fourth week of school for me, but I plan on taking as many AP as I can, and attempting to get into that top 10.

You seem confused about the distinction between top 10 and top 10%. As far as whether you can get into the top 10%, most likely you can if you work hard, because you aren’t that far out of it. Whether you can get into the top 10, I really doubt this. The top 10 students at a huge school like yours must be pretty good. I wouldn’t expect them to slack off. You have no control over what other students are achieving and you should stop worrying so much about this. Just take courses at a level appropriate for you and work hard. Nothing more you can do and ruining high school years you can never get back obsessing about your exact class rank is just sad.
