How hard (or rare) is it to get a 4.0 (or near 4.0 GPA) during the first semester at Rochester? or at least a 3.9+?
assuming that I will keep myself away from distractions, manage my time well, and give 100% focus on my studies?

I am thinking about going this fall, interested in sociology, economics, and philosophy. From what i hear from current students is that there are many 3.8~ ish GPAs but not too many very high GPAs. on another note, i loved my campus visit and am excited to attend there this fall!

The answer to your question depends on too many variables to allow anyone to answer it with any reasonable assurance of being right.

Do some students get a 4.0 their first semester at UR? Heck yes.

Do most students get a 4.0 their first semester at UR? Definitely not.

Will you get a 4.0 your first semester at UR? No way to even guess.

You shouldn’t give 100% focus to your studies. That is not what life is for.

Honestly, I think it’s pretty easy to get high grades here, and most professors do want students to do well. I personally got a 4.0 my first semester, taking 20 credits (took honors calc and just generally mathy/sciency type stuff), and I spent surprisingly little time doing actual work. I had a ton of spare time for extracurricular things (still do), so I wouldn’t say it’s too far of a goal to aim for a perfect GPA. Though even a little effort will definitely get you a good GPA, and a lot of the time, that’s really all you need.

thanks everyone for your insight and opinions~~

i guess its safe to say hard work is the path to success.
