My out-of-state high school uses a 4.0 grading scale. What does it mean when colleges in FL say their median GPA for incoming freshmen is 3.7-4.3? Or 4.1-4.6? Is it on a 5.0 scale? If it is on a 5.0 scale, would my 3.68/4.0 GPA would be a 4.6? (3.68/4 * 5 = 4.6) I would just like some clarification please.
Sorry for the typo.
Since 4.0 scales are unweighted you’d take all the grades on your transcript and calculate your gpa like that A’s=4 B’s =3 C’s = 2 D’s=1 and F’s=1. Add up all the numbers and divide by your number of classes. Calculate your grade average for each school year then add them all up and divide them by the years your calculating. Hopefully this is helpful.
There’s gpa calculators online too. And when a college says that a certain amount is their median gpa that means that the average gpa for students admitted to the school.
Here’s a link to gpa conversion for university of Florida : https://catalog.ufl.edu/ugrad/current/regulations/info/grades.aspx
The Florida universities add 0.5 points to every Honors class and 1.0 point to every IB/AP class. That is where you get a GPA>4.0. It should be explained on the USF website. Add those extra points to your total points and divide by #credits.
Not every class, however, is counted in your admissions GPA. Electives are not counted, with the exception of 2-3 upper level pseudo-academic courses (symphonic band, Art III, Business II). In Florida, many districts mandate high school students to take 7 courses, regardless of whether they also take AP or dual enrollment courses. These students take MANY electives that count-for-nothing on a college application (e.g., Food Preparation, Parenting, Volleyball, Careers, etc.)
