I am currently studying in a community college, and accepted by UCSD as an economics major. I have a question regarding the changes of GPA after transfer. As far as I know, it is possible that a transfer student did badly in a community college, but then graduated with an awesome GPA (lets say 3.5+). However, not everyone will do good in a prestigious college after transferring, so my question is that how much GPA students will usually drop comparing with the admitted GPA they had when they applied.

I don’t have any solid statistics for you but I am guessing that 50-80% of CC transfers will have a lower GPA when they graduate from UC compared to when they graduated from CC.

The majority of transfers are probably looking at a 0.5 drop in their GPA in their first semester at a UC. The same goes for high school students entering UC’s.

0.5 dropped after transfer for their first semester? That is quite a lot! What about their GPA at their graduation? Is it sppoused to boost up a bit or to drop continuously? I assume it will be much lower than the one they had in cc, but how low will it be?

It depends on your major , and how high your GPA was in CC.
If you have a 3.9 now and you transfer to UCB its very unlikely for you to keep that 3.9 .

However if you GPA is a 3.0 now and you have a humanities major then its not unreasonable to think you could keep ur 3.0 .

my short answer estimates: expect a drop if you’re transferring into the sciences / engineering. anyone in letters and science should remain about the same +/- ~.2

i came in with a ~3.5 and i’m coming out with a ~3.5 (philosophy)
