I am terribly worried about my chances of getting into Cornell. I have a lopsided GPA (straight A's history and english, but 1 A, 3B's and 1 C in math/science.) I received 2 B's junior yr in math and science, 1 A science and 1 B math soph y, and a B and C freshman yr (had trouble adjusting freshman yr due to big move). Will I be at a terrible disadvantage because of this discrepency? My ecs are considered as above average/good and my test scores are very good. What do you guys think of my chances at Cornell ED gpa wise? Can my ecs and test scores make up for this? THanks!!!!!

Of course it'll MATTER..But maybe it's something you can address in an essay/interview. If you got a C in a difficult class over an A in a cake-walk class, that needs to be taken into account also. Good luck!

well, it was an accelerated math class. I had moved in the middle of the yr, so my academics were slightly strained. Do you know anyone in a similar situation. ?

I received a C in AP Calculus...Granted it was an AP class, and I missed 12 days of school with mono & a staph infection...In one of my interviews the admission's officer asked about grades and what was my worst performance. I fessed up, not turning it into a sob story or anything, and he told me that it wouldn't affect me adversely, that a drop in the class would have looked a lot worse- as would a C in a non-accelerated class.

The moving/adjustment thing could definitely help to explain your grade slip.

still...its cornell man, maybe its not for you if you cant get As and Bs. i think itll hurt.

It might hurt :-(

Of course it will hurt. people with 3.95s will be applying to cornell. something you don't have because you got a C and some other not so good grades.

Good recs, good ec's, and a good essay in combination with the grades you listed above would make you a competitive candidate for ED at Cornell.

ED is interesting at Cornell. Because so many of Cornell's students wanted to go to HYP but couldn't get in, the adcoms really really like students who have Cornell as their first choice.

My counselor says that she will explain the C in her counselor rec. BTW, the C occured Freshman yr :(. However, my ec's are pretty good. They include lab courses at Cold Spring Harbor, 400 hours of community service at local hospital, 2 yrs jv football, 2 yrs cross country, 3 yrs track, treasurer and executive board member of key club , executive board member of homecoming committee, Captain of Relay for life which helped raise over 1000 dollars, volunteering and learning about ayurveda at an Ayurvedic clinic in India, job at doctors office, shadowing a physician, doing a research project on Insulin pump therapy, started fundraiser for American Diabetes WALK at my school (will know total amount in October), Who's Who, National Honor society member, FHA member. I will also be taking 6 APs Senior yr :AP Calc AB, AP lit, AP gov, Ap Eco, AP French, AP Physics. I also took AP US junior yr and got a 4.I also have a 33 ACT, 800 2C, 650 Chem (took after honors, will retake for 750+). My recs will be great. Will this help me?

bump!!!!!!!!!!

okay, you asked for our opinion, mine is iffy for u, report back to us in december. all the best.

can you give me a percent? Sry lol

I'd say 30-50% if you do ED - ASSUMING that your ec's, essay and recs are really good.

Regular decision, 5-10%.

If you do ED and your ECs, essay and recs aren't good, I'd say 10-15% chance.

Colleges will consider your entire application. If you have high test scores in areas which your grades weren't solid, then it may make up for it. If your school is very competitive and has a good standing at the institution, then it will make up for it (of course, both these won't completely make up for it).

Interesting that you say your freshman year grades could have been better without the move.

I moved after freshman year, and it was tough. I wonder how much colleges consider emotional hardships like that. I mean, I had a 3.8 that year, so could I stretch to say it might have been a 4.0 if I had been comfortable?

Godfather: are you being sarcastic?

Renindetroit et al: Do you think getting a rec from my science research teacher, who is a Cornell alumni, would be a good idea? Will it help? what about my senior yr courseload?

yes--good idea about the alum...itll help! good luck!
