GPA Question

Hello all,

I am an Asian Male in an Overrepresented State and will have an unweighted GPA of 3.82/4.00 at the end of Junior Year. (2 B's and 4 A- total from freshman to junior) I have taken the most rigorous courseload, but 5 AP's junior year really hurt my gpa. All other parts of my app are really strong, so I was wondering if this GPA was too low for an Asian to make the implied grade cutoff for hypsm type schools. Please please please help.

Colleges judge you in the context of your school. So, forgetting about ethnicity for the moment, what is your approximate ranking – top 1%, top 2%, top 5%, top 10%? And what are your ACT/SAT scores?

My rank will probably be top 10 percent though I’m not positive on that. My SAT score is a 2300

You will not be discounted from HYPSM simply because of your academic record. A 3.82 with a 2300 and a rigorous course load is still very competitive for the Ivies. Does your school report your class rank or decile or anything like that?
I wouldn’t worry too much about the fact that you’re an ORM, there’s not much you can do about it, and I tend to think that it does not affect decisions as much as people think it does.

If you were ranked in the top 1% to 2% of your class, I would say go ahead and apply SCEA to HYP or S. However, as your ranking is within the top 10%, but not in the top 1% to 2%, it’s likely you will be deferred to the RD round, as they will want to compare you to a broader range of applicants. Therefore, I’m more inclined to suggest that you should apply to a broad range of non-binding early schools such as UChicago, MIT, Georgetown etc and apply to HYP or S in the RD round.

Yes, I was wondering if my gpa would be too low for the RD rounds at HYPSM. Like in the RD round would adcoms look at my gpa and throw me out? I guess what Im asking is if I get rejected will it be because of my gpa

HYPS all say they don’t admit students in the early round unless they would also be admitted in the RD round. That’s admissions-speak for “We admit the best of the best in the early round.” Now, how they define “best” is really the big question.

One definition of best is ranking. When a high school doesn’t provide ranking, often colleges line up all applications from a high school in GPA order and compare rigor. So, if many students from your high school apply to HYPS in the early round, every college will know approximately where those early students stand in the pecking order at their school. What they don’t know is who else might be applying in the RD round. So, Admissions tends to err on the side of caution and defer students not at the top of their class – they want to wait to see who else applies in the RD round. With your stats, I do not think you will be rejected in the early round because of your GPA, but I do think you stand a good chance of being deferred because of your ranking.

I was never planning on applying early to these schools. My only question is if in the rd round, not after applying early, will my gpa be too low to be considered

The RD round is a crapshoot; no one can predict what will happen there. Your GPA is not too low, so if you are rejected in the RD round it will not be because of your GPA, but because of other more subjective factors, such as teacher recommendations, essays, and EC’s.

Can anyone else second what Gibby just said? Thank you so much or all your help!

Yes, I second everything Gibby said.

OP, you for see @gibby profile pic? He knows about the Ivies lol, his kids are going to them.

I know gibby knows his stuff, wasn’t
doubting that at all. Just wanted some other opinions just to add to my knowledge base

What opinions? That you’re a viable candidate for the Ivies? Well you are. What else is there to say?

That’s what I wasn’t sure of. I wasn’t sure if my gpa was too low to be a potential candidate, especially because of race

Im going to bump this just because. Anyone else have any thoughts?
