hey all. I've been stressed lately about my gpa, wondering if it is still even salvagable to get to harvard's standards.

Last year, (freshman) I did poorly and barely kept any B's. Right now, it is a few weeks before 1st semester grades of sophomore year.

I have already calculated what my expected gpa will be, and its a 3.65. I figured I can get a 3.7 by the end of sophomore year, and a 3.85 by the end of junior year. (my calculations might be a bit off.. I got different answers when i did it myself, did it on a website, and what my transcript says what my gpa is now..)

Anyways, if my gpa is a 3.8 UW (always better to underestimate) is that even worth applying with?

It might be slightly higher, considering I am taking 6 online classes (one of which is an AP course)

I know this is not the advice you're looking for, but Harvard's standards encompass so much more than GPA. Salvageable is completely different depending on the context.

Thanks for the speedy reply! Yes, I am definitely aware that Gpa is not at all the most important aspect of a college application, but I was just paranoid becuase so many of the denied applications had 3.8ish gpas.

Class rank is more important than pure GPA. If you are in the top 10%, you should be fine. If you are in the top 25%, you still might be alright, but any lower and you can consider yourself summarily rejected.

It depends on the school, A-san. At many schools, even the valedictorian has a pretty low shot, but at a number of schools anyone in the top 25% could have a shot (usually pretty small elite schools- Dalton, Brearley, Boston Latin...)

I wonder how people dare to make statements here about what's more important in one's application. How do you people know? Afterall, who participates in these forums? Applicants who are competing with each other and perhaps the occasional alumni ...and even THEY can not really know, other than what the official Harvard Adcom website says and their own personal experiences.
As ar as the weight of GPA vs SAT vs SATIIs vs ACT vs ECs vs URMs vs Legacy vs Sports it is all pure speculation.

So..lets all chill out a little bit with some of the comments..shouldnt we??
