GPA vs. SAT

What is the average GPA/SAT scores that people have to be accepted into a UC school? includes UCI, UCSD, UCSM… etc. Thanks!

UCB is 3.89 GPA and a 2000-2100 on SAT.

If i where to have a 3.45 GPA and 1,800 SAT would that get me into any UC school?

No, there is no average UC GPA that will get you into any UC school. Each school has a different selectivity, so you need target the schools were your Stats are at minimum at the average or agove. Also acceptances are not just based on GPA/SAT scores. Essays and EC’s will be part of the application. UC’s also want to see you take a rigorous schedule of classes in HS. 6-8 AP’s are average for many of the UC applicants. The UC’s use 14 areas of criteria to evaluate the applicants.

If you take a look at all the decision threads for this year, applicants with GPA’s of 4.0+ and SAT scores of 2000+ were getting rejected and waitlisted at many schools. First calculate your UC GPA: http://rogerhub.com/gpa-calculator-uc/

Based on your posted GPA and SAT score, target schools would be UCR/UCM and UCSC. If you have a UC GPA within the 3.8 range, then maybe UCI/UCD and UCSB. The rest of the UC’s would be reaches and they are getting more competitive each year, so no guarantees for any applicants.

Here is the avg UC GPA SAT ACT scores from last year
UCM: 3.61 1638 24
UCR: 3.77 1739 25
UCSC: 3.82 1782 26
UCI: 4.05 1867 27
UCSB: 4.03 1925 29
UCD: 4.07 1924 28
UCSD: 4.13 2018 30
UCLA: 4.17 2067 30
UCB: 4.18 2071 31

If you plan to go into a competitive major, you need to be above the averages.

That’s more competitive than i thought! Where would i fall with a GPA of 3.6 and 1800 SAT?

@SuccessStepOne:
UCSC/UCR/UCM: Match Schools
UCSB/UCI/UCD: Low Reach Schools
UCB/UCLA/UCSD: Reach Schools

Outstanding esays and EC’s could make some those Reach schools closer to a Match. Much depends upon how your application is received by admissions and each campus will review it differently.

I do not see any safeties, so consider your local in-service Cal State some other Cal states such as CSUF, CSUN, CPP etc. There also many private schools that might be of interest, so what I would do is plug in your information into the Supermatch feature and see what kind of matches you get. The most important factors in selecting colleges to apply:

  1. Cost:: What can you and your family afford? No point in applying to schools that will be too expensive to attend
  2. Balanced List: 2 Safeties (affordable and high chance at an acceptance), 2-3 Match schools and 2-3 Reach.
  3. Fit: Make sure you are willing to attend all schools on your list, especially the Safeties, since many applicants are being rejected and waitlisted at a majority of their schools. If you have a good list, this should not happen and you should have several schools to choose from in the end.

are match schools the schools that will most likely accept me? and reach schools are a maybe?

Match schools are schools where you have a good chance for an acceptance. Reach schools are a low chance for an acceptance. Chancing threads are really useless, since no one on CC is an admissions officer and we do not see the whole package. Use these chances as a guideline, to make sure your college list is not too top heavy with alot of Reaches. Admissions are unpredictable so having a majority of Matches on your list will give the most options. Also 1-2 safeties, where you know you almost guaranteed admission is important. I would apply to at least 10 schools and a goal of 4-6 acceptances, ultimately all 10 would be great.
