What is a good weighted or unweighted GPA for top tier schools?
4.0 unweighted
4.0 unweighted is definitely a goal to strive for, but what about a 3.6 or 3.7 unweighted? Will that put me at a disadvantage? (I’m a Junior in a blue ribbon school of excellence)
Good job, mom. I agree. 4.0 is good. Less is…not so good.
On a recent poll, half (50%) of Harvard students had a 4.0 At Stanford, it was 75%.
You don’t have to be perfect to get into top colleges, unlike the posters above me.
Well, Jughead, that might work for you, but the facts are that 90% of the students at Harvard and Stanford have a GPA above 3.75. If you are shooting for that lowest 10%, you might have to have a hook of some kind.
It depends on the school you attend. Some schools have grade inflation, and if you don’t have a 4.0 you can say goodbye to ‘top’ colleges. Other schools it’s really tough to get a 4.0 and having a 3.8 still looks good to these ‘top’ colleges.
You’re better off talking to people in your school (not necessarily other students, perhaps your guidance counselor as well) about what kind of GPA you need to be competitive.
