I was filling out part 1 of the USC app. and it asks what my "un weighed cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale" is. How can this be calculated? does it include freshman yr? a-g? summer school? -Thanks

i had the same problem because my school only gives out the weighted gpa out of 100. I asked my guidence counselor and he ran it through the schools average program and found my average, you should just ask your school.

can anyone give me the formula? lol or is it like a UC GPA?

All A's = 4 points, B's =3, C's =2. D's =1. Assign each class a point value and divide the total point by the number of classes you took. That should be your unweighted gpa, or close to it. Admissions will be recalculating it as well.

At my school an A- is 3.67 and a B+ is 3.33...would they recalculate GPA according to A=4, B=3, etc.?

^ I think you should just do the calculation for them. Check which GPA turns out higher.

What about AP, is that a five? Do i include freshman year? what courses can i include? can i include PE and stuff? - thanks

To calculate your unweighted GPA do not assign any extra value to AP or honors courses. (Giving them extra value is what is meant by "weighting.") You should definitely include freshman year. I believe that you can include PE and anything else that will show up on your official high school transcript. If your summer school class grades are on your transcript you should probably include them as well. If USC doesn't want to count PE or some other class, they'll remove it themselves when they recalculate your GPA. They will also take the difficulty of your course load into account, thus giving you credit for your AP classes.

To calculate USC GPA from a 100 point scale to a 4.0 scale (this is the most common translation but check with your high school to be sure):

For each class-
90-100 = 4 points
80-89 = 3 points
70-79 = 2 points
60-69 = 1 point

-Include grades 9-11.
-There are no extra points for honors, AP, or IB classes.
-Your GPA will be looked at alongside your schedule, your school's profile, your rank, and your trend (they will give strong attention to an upward trend.)
-You will also be asked to send in your transcript for first semester senior year.

About including PE and Health- since their question on Part 1 states: "Cummulative unweighted GPA on a 4.0 scale", there is no statement to exclude anything so I would include it.

Correction- I just talked to admissions about your questions. They said that you should put your UNWEIGHTED ACADEMIC GPA on part 1 (no PE or Health) and you don't need to translate your GPA from the 100 point scale. This GPA is not used for evaluation anyway. They will look at your regular application to evaluate your grades. You will not have to translate your grades to a 4.0 scale there either.

The only reason you may want to translate your grades is to be able to quote it and compare to other applicants like here on CC.
