What sort of GPA do most students get after they are in a BS?
Assuming that most students have very good GPAs entering BS (3.7 and above...), what sort of GPA can a student expect to have once in BS?

I understand that there will be those that still get 4.0's, but what is typically expected?

Futhermore, if a student gets a "low" gpa, around 2.8 to 3.0, what type of a college could they expect to get into?

My older son's gpa upon graduation was right around 3.1/3.2. (He was 4.0 going in from middle school). If I remember correctly, he was in the largest grade percentage. The college he was most interested in attending was not a difficult one to get into (and he did). He also gained admission and generous academic scholarships to Lehigh and Villanova, which are more difficult and he never would have been admitted to those with that low of a gpa from our public hs.

I had straight A's since forever entering boarding school, and now have 2 a's a b and 2 c's. I would say this is about average, obviously some being better some being worse. For St. Paul's at least

My current freshman also entered with a perfect record and now has two B+'s and two A-'s (one of the B+'s might just have dropped to a B if he's correct in his feelings about a test he just took). He is upset, but his older brother told him, relax...it will only get worse. Nice positive outlook.

Interesting topic. Several students we have spoken to on our tours have said thier grades went UP at boarding school. Not because it was easier but because they were more challenged and interested. It was also at boys schools were they focus on boys (and there IS a difference in how boys and girls learn) and helping them to reach their potential.

I believe the average GPA at Andover is around 4.5 out of 6. There really is no rough translation between a boarding school and average public school since there are so many factors to consider. Keep in mind that the classes you take are important. A 4.5 taking the easiest classes is not the same as a 4.5 taking the hardest classes. My GPA dropped slightly when I entered, but that's pretty typical.

So, a 4.5 average is closer to 80-81. From my experiences, people are generally ecstatic with a 6, pretty happy with a 5, content with a 4, disappointed with a 3, and distraught with a 2,1,0. Again, it's tough to compare grades as the course load of students differs dramatically from one to another.

I know NMH does not rank students, not sure about AESD. I remember, though, that NMH did give a graphic showing the grade distribution. The bars were quite low at the top end of the scale, I don't have it handy though.
I remember being shocked at how few students were named to the cum laude society compared with the "National Honor Society" at our public hs.
My son's best friend got a "D" in Japanese (or Andover's equivalent of a D, ?2, his freshman year)....he still attended Dartmouth.

Andover doesn't rank students, and I don't think many others do. Like NMH we have a bar graph showing the distribution of grades. This graph is sent to colleges so they have an idea of where you stand. We also have Cum Laude, so you have some indication of who is near the top.
