Hello, I am a freshman at the University of Michigan. I might recieve a C in an English course for my first semester. I intend to go to Grad school for math or science however will just having the C make me uncompetitive to other applicants? Thank you

Nope. You'll be fine, as long as you can somewhat demonstrate, probalby through your statement of purpose, an ability to communicate. For the best programs, as long as you keep a farily high overall GPA, the higher the better, but somewhere between a 3.00 and 3.5, with higher science and math course grades, some good research, a few great teachers recs, and good GRE scores, you'll be in good shape.

I know the higher the GPA the better, but would one really be competitive with a 3.0-3.45 GPA for grad school in engineering or the sciences? (provided that he has everything else mentioned)?

i took a course in grad school and they said that any one of those "other" things can override an OK gpa. try to do your best, but it's not the focal point.

Haha, I have a 3.4 and I just got an interview with one of the (cell biology) programs to which I applied, even though the application deadline isn't for another two weeks! :)

aren't you in graduate school, molliebatmit?

No, I'm a senior -- applying this year.
