Grade Inflation at PRE-MEDICINE COURSES?

Is there any grade inflation in the Pre-Med courses at UMICHIGAN like biology, organic chemistry, physics, math...? I want to apply but I feel like I can do better at another school that has a much lesser premed enironment. I mean Umich has 20,000+UGRADS. So maybe somewhere like Grinell or Carleton is a better environment than doing Premed at Michigan. I mean the med school is great but I am worried that it is cutthroat and I may settle for under 3.5 GPA..?

First of all, not all 20,000 undergrads intend to study premed.

Why do you feel that you'd do better in a lesser premed environment? Intro courses for premed are all going to be tough in any school that you go to. Most of the time it's beneficial for both the school and the student since it helps the student decide if they really want to go down the difficult and long pre-med route or study something different early in their college careers (helps colleges boost four year graduation rates). It's only going to get harder after freshmen year. If you really do want to become a doctor you shouldn't expect shortcuts anywhere. Smaller LACs don't offer as many opportunities UM has in the research department where you could work with professors and build your resume. I suggest checking out the HSSP MLC if you do attend UM-it's a program where other pre-health students live and help each other out (I'm in it!). Also, a 3.5 GPA and a good MCAT from UM will probably get you into a good med program!

what about grade inflation and curves?

I don't know from where you draw your question, but grade inflation does not occur anywhere at Michigan, specifically in the pre med courses. All pre med courses are curved to a b-, with about 10% of the students getting a's. If you graduate with a 3.4 from Michigan, you will most likely get into a respectable med school. If you graduate with a 3.6, you can get into a GREAT med school. (assuming your mcats are strong).

Just try hard man...its a tough road to take as it is for all pre-med students at michigan. I asked all these same questions you are when I was applyin to michigan, but just go to a college you'll enjoy and know you can succeed at and you will be fine
