Prompt: (short) Do you think that we need adversity to discover who we are?

Adversity helps us find out who we really are; it helps to build character, instill work ethic, and create drive. Examples of people who overcame adversity through these three principles are Jack Welch, Howard Schultz, and Mark Cuban.

Jack Welch is one of the most successful businessmen in American history; when he retired as CEO from General Electric in 2001, he received the largest severance package in history. But, Jack Welch was not given his success, he earned it through hard work, and overcoming adversity.

Howard Schultz--CEO of Starbucks and the 354th richest man on the Forbes 400 list--is another example of someone who overcame adversity to succeed. Schultz was always living on the edge; he grew up in a home with seven brothers and sisters, where there was barely enough food to eat. Through this adversity, Schultz was always hungry, hungry for success.

Another man who fought through adversity is Mark Cuban. Cuban slept on an apartment floor, had 57 dollars to his name, and was jobless. Through this struggle, Cuban learned how difficult life is. He started random companies for five years before every moving out of that apartment, which he shared with six other people. After finally having somewhat of a success, Cuban kept striving and pushing for success, which eventually led to him becoming a multi-billionaire and the successful owner of the Dallas Mavericks.

Overall, adversity does help us to discover who we really are by forcing us to step of our shadows and strive for success. Adversity makes us hungry.
