I have practised writing SAT essays several times and I have compared my essays with other people's, but I am still unsure of how good or how bad my essay is. I hope it would at least be moderately ok although I know my language is not sophisticated enough.

thanks.

prompt: some people claim that each individual is solely responsible for what happens to him or her. But the claim that we ought to take absolute responsibility for the kinds of people we are and the kinds of lives we lead suggests that we have complete control over our lives. We do not. The circumstances of our lives can make it more or less impossible to make certain kinds of choices.

assignment: are we free to make our own decisions or are we limited in the choices we can make?

Are we free to make our own decisions? The answer to this question should be "yes"; but a person should be responsible for any decisions he makes. Indeed, a person is not limited to make a decision, but it is the consequences a decision brings limit the person.

In China, it is a general trend that a person with a wealthy background should marry another person with a similar background-----similar academic degree and similar financial abilities. Under this big trend in society, a wealthy young man can certainly marry a not-so-affluent girl, because afterall, marriage is solely a single person's decision, and ought not to be done based on the requests and pressure from the older generation. However, the reality is, once the young man marries the not-so-wealthy young woman, he and his new bride may receive even more pressure from the young man's parents and , as a bride, the young girl may be disliked by the young man's parents because the parents are prejudiced against the girl. Thus, even the young man's plan of marrying the young girl is carried out, both the bride and young man's own parents would not feel happy about the marriage, and the decision only brings more misery than happiness. Therefore, if a young man is responsible for the girl he likes and his own parents, he would not be only considering making a decision that is only in favor of himself, but would try to do something more satisfying to the girl and his parents.

I myself also have a notable experience supporting the claim that "a person is free to do anything under the condition of no responsibilities". I have always wanted to be a writer. But a writer is generally considered a career with unstable income ,which in turn could possibly provide financial harship for both me and my family. So now I took my parents' advise, and turned to plan being an accountant in the future, with the reason that accountants are always in demand and are able to earn a reasonable amount of income. Although I don't really like being an accountant, but my career choice is not all about myself; it is about the promise of my family's and my own happiness in the future.

Indeed, one is always free to make any choices, but one must consider the consequences an egoistic decision can bring, since an irresponsible deicision is capable of bringing harms and unhappiness for other people.
