Think carefully about the issue presented in the following excerpt and the assignment below.

Most people think that contentment—being happy with the way things are—is the perfect state of affairs. After all, what could be better than being so satisfied with how things are that you don't want anything else? But contentment has disadvantages: if we are content with the way things are, we are not motivated to change things, to improve ourselves, or to do better. We must therefore always choose between being content and pushing ourselves to do better.

Assignment:

Does being content with the way things are prevent people from improving themselves and doing better? Plan and write an essay in which you develop your point of view on this issue. Support your position with reasoning and examples taken from your reading, studies, experience, or observations.

Nowadays, the most essential aspect that mankind looks forward is improvement. By the word improvement, I mean that people crave updating the way things are. So yes, I believe that being content with the way things are prevent people from improving themselves and doing better.

Nelson Mandela, an african political and spirtual leader, believed that change is necessary. Decades ago, the black citizens suffered discrimnation all over the world. Realizing this, Mandla had the courage to stand against racism in his country and fought fot his people's rights. Consequently, he was imprisoned for more than quarter of a century. Later when he was freed, he became the president of his own country and won Noble peace prize. Now he is a world renown humantraian.

A literay example from the Man's Journey, exmplifies how significant can a change be in a indvidual's life. Matthew stewart, a 17 years old african-american boy, live at the country sides of New York. Deprived of his basic necessities that included shelter and food, Matthew decided that he did need to work on hia life and make his life go the way it should. He gathered whatever money he has, took loans and decided to open a small antiques shop. 20 years later, the shop was a company. Mattew then became world notorious business man. The change he made and the hardships he wentt through came ro be fruitious.

Indeed, improvemnet and hoping for better lives, helped both Nelson Mandela and Mattew Stewart axhieve their dreams. One cannot just accept the way things are, but look for a more challenging and statifying life.
