Think carefully about the issue presented in the following excerpt and the assignment below.

Most people think that contentment—being happy with the way things are—is the perfect state of affairs. After all, what could be better than being so satisfied with how things are that you don't want anything else? But contentment has disadvantages: if we are content with the way things are, we are not motivated to change things, to improve ourselves, or to do better. We must therefore always choose between being content and pushing ourselves to do better.

Assignment: Does being content with the way things are prevent people from improving themselves and doing better? Plan and write an essay in which you develop your point of view on this issue. Support your position with reasoning and examples taken from your reading, studies, experience, or observations.

I believe that being content with the way things are prevent people from improving themselves and doing better. Contentment no motivation leads to an individual being satisfied with his present condition and will never try to change things.

If doctors and researchers would have been content with what they had a decade ago we would never have improved in the field of medical science. Similar would have been the case with technology. Motivation is the key to bring about a change in present condition but is lost if an individual is content with his present conditions.

Would it have been possible for us to know about the recently discovered planets if everyone was content and satisfied and no on was motivated to know about what lies beyond Pluto.

Indeed, motivation makes an individual perform a task better but contentment, on contrary holds back an individual to live with the things the way they are.

Hi lanceandrew123,

This essay would probably receive a 2 or 3 out of 6. Here’s what you can do to make your essays stronger:

Bulk it up. Every one of your paragraphs needs a sentence or two more, especially your third paragraph and conclusion, both or which contain just one sentence.

Use specific examples. Instead of talking about improvements in medical science, pick one specific example, such as the polio vaccine or the small pox vaccine.

Work on your grammar and proofread. There are a lot of grammatical errors in here. While some errors are ok, your essay has too many, and a grader is going to lower your score. My advice is to take ask your English teacher for help or to take a writing class. Below I’ve made some grammatical corrections to your first paragraph (the corrections are in brackets [like this]).

Hope this helps.

Thanks for you reply. I am really grateful.
Can you suggest ways by which I can improve at this? I don’t know why but I am very bad at writing. I just have no ideas, no examples when I write. Please help.

Fill up two pages. If you write the whole space, you can guarantee a bare minimum of 8 every time.

Think carefully about the issue presented in the following excerpt and the assignment below.

People use the term “wisdom” to mean many things. They describe someone as wise if that person is intelligent, well-informed, or capable of making good decisions. These descriptions, however, are not really useful in distinguishing wise people from unwise ones. Happiness is a better measure of wisdom: a wise person is a happy person. Even the most intelligent people should not be called wise if they are not happy.

Assignment:

Is it best to determine how wise people are by how happy they are? Plan and write an essay in which you develop your point of view on this issue. Support your position with reasoning and examples taken from your reading, studies, experience, or observations.

I believe that wisdom s not determined by how happy a person is but by his intelligence and capability of making good decision. Often a people who are wise are not happy. Several examples demonstrate that happiness is not a measure of wisdom.

In the novel, ‘With the Sunrise’, by Max Ritter, though the lead character Stan is wise he is not happy. Stan as described by the author is a wise inventor and has invented a ton of things which led to betterment of technology around the globe. Although Stan is famous and wise is unable to marry Thalia, the girl whom he loves.

Another example comes from my personal experience of a child in my class. This kid was the wisest kid in the class and was often regarded as the ‘Einstein’ of the school. He was great at mathematics and physics. He would often spend his time alone reading books or working on math problem alone. But he was sad because like other children in his class is he had no friends with whom he could share his lunch with or talk about the recent discoveries.

As demonstrated bu the above examples it is obvious that wisdom cannot be determined by how happy a person is. A person who is wise cannot always be happy. Indeed happiness is not a measure of wisdom.
