I know it’s a little late, but this is one final practice before the test tomorrow and I wanted to get some opinions on my essay. Any advice is greatly appreciated!
Prompt:
Many of the goods and services we depend on daily are now supplied by intelligent, automated
machines rather than human beings. Robots build cars and other goods on assembly lines, where once
there were human workers. Many of our phone conversations are now conducted not with people but
with sophisticated technologies. We can now buy goods at a variety of stores without the help of a
human cashier. Automation is generally seen as a sign of progress, but what is lost when we replace
humans with machines? Given the accelerating variety and prevalence of intelligent machines, it is
worth examining the implications and meaning of their presence in our lives
Essay:
What has America come to? Today many services have been taken over by technology such as automated phone operators, online shopping, self-checkouts, etc., While this very helpful to our society, it also has drawbacks. Humans and machines should be used in a balance.
Some would argue that machines are very good at both load and high skill jobs. They are much more efficient than humans as well as more cost-effective. Machines make for a more progressive world for everyone. On the other hand, some would argue that machines are detrimental to society. They are causing many people to lose basic communication skills. Machines are also taking thousands of jobs that other people could have.
While many argue that machines are much more efficient than humans and better overall, machines are not without their own flaws. Machines aren’t perfect. Just think about how many times a self-checkout has caused you major frustration and heartache. Not only self-checkouts but think of the issues you have had to deal with regarding automated phone operators, online purchases, etc., Machines aren’t perfect and are not always the best solution. Many also argue that machines are taking away from a person’s communication skills. While they may reduce human interaction somewhat, they do not completely eradicate it by any means. Machines are very useful for completing repetitive, low-skilled jobs, such as assembly lime work. There must be a balance between humans and machines.
American is ever changing and growing due to the constant advances in machinery and technology. We need machines for more menial duties, such as assembly line work, but we must have human interaction and involvement in all of these machines in order for them to work. A balance between humans and machines could propel our society to unknown heights.
In America, machines are becoming even more present in daily lives. If controlled properly, this could blossom into a flower of utopia. All of the world’s problems could be solved and everybody could live peacefully. Just as Henry Cabot Lodge once put it, “Everything is great, as long as it is balanced.”
