Prompt: Do we need other people in order to understand ourselves?

Response:
In order to understand yourself, you must first understand others. People can relate to each other, and the connections made between people can give us a glimpse of our own nature. Other people reveal what was hidden by the way we react to certain situations. In The Kite Runner and Frankenstein, the characters find themselves and realize their persona through other characters.

In the Kite Runner, Amir is an upper class boy living during the Taliban revolution. He has a Hazara servant named Hassan, who is his best friend. ON the day of the kite festival, Amir's true nature emerges. Hassan, the ever loyal friend, goes to chase down Amir's prize, but encounters a mean bully and his obedient cronies. Hasson gets raped and beaten up, with Amir witnessing the whole incident. Instead of standing up and protecting Hassan, Amir quietly watches and takes no belligerent action to save his friend. Amir is then viewed as a coward who is too scared to fight for his best friend, who would clearly, in a heartbeat, lay down his life to save Amir. Hassan's magnanimous and devoted friendship only guilts Amir for many years, and Amir's escape to America only strengthens his personality as a coward and unloyal friend.

Like how Amir realized he was undeserving of Hassan's kind friendship, the creature in Frankenstein also becomes aware of his own nature through others. The creature, abandoned by his creator, Frankenstein, gos off on his own and spies on a family of cottagers. By witnessing love and attention the cottagers display despite their destitution sparks the creature's desire for human interaction. His hope of being loved is shattered when Felix, one of the cottagers, chases him out without even knowing him. The creature then realizes, through Felix's actions, that he cannot fit in with human kind. By understanding Felix's fear, the creature becomes aware that he is hideious and no one will ever love him. He deems himself as an outcast of society and realizes that he is incapable of being loved because of his wretched appearance.

Through the understanding of others, people become aware of their own nature. Without others to compare to, we can never determine our own nature based on subjectivity. Having others creates a standard and acts as a factor to contrast ourselves and discover the ways of our own nature.

4/6. Work on your vocabulary and flow. Your first paragraph and last paragraph are not very good, but your main paragraphs have a lot of detail.
