In my English class we have to write a 2 pg paper due each Friday (for a total of 10 papers worth 50% of our grade).

I wrote the third one early and went to my professor to see if I could do anything to improve it (first two papers I only managed to get a B and B+). He literally did not have anything to say in terms of improving. He said it was very good and that he could definitely see how I have improved by taking earlier comments into mind.

Then I get the paper back, graded by the TA, and it got a C+.

Obviously I was shocked, seeing as how the professor didn't see major flaws in it but the TA thought it was a C paper?? I've emailed both the professor and TA to have office hours. The professor has already replied and we're to meet tomorrow morning. The TA has read the email but has yet to respond (our email system lets us see when people have read emails sent to them).

What exactly do I say to my professor/TA? Do I mention grade change or do I just keep it to myself?

Is the grade grievance procedure outlined in your syllabus? For all of my classes we have to wait 24 hours after receiving the grade and then submit a grievance in writing and then the GSI will regrade it, and if we are STILL not happy we can resubmit it and they’ll have another GSI for the course grade it and then you get whatever grade they decide to give you. If you don’t follow that procedure they won’t bend on the grades. I wonder, why did you bring your paper to your professor for feedback and not your TA?

I went to my professor mostly because I had talked to him about my papers twice before, and was under the impression that as the more experienced teacher anything he had to say would cover the major flaws. I also that week was incredibly busy for me and the TA has always responded to my emails very late, like 2-3 days later.

My uni doesn’t have a grade grievance procedure. I have heard of many accounts where students simply go to professors and ask about grades/etc.

Honestly I just find it ridiculous that the professor did not see any flaws but the TA managed to see major ones that warrant a C-grade.

That is pretty crazy. The GSIs here have office hours just like professors so I’ve just been taking my papers to them since they are the ones who get to grade them.

Deal with the professor, if possible. In my experience, some TAs can go on a power-happy trip and take their pointy red pen a little too seriously, which seems to be the case here.
