prompt: are bad choices and good choices equally likely to have negative consequences?

As humans, we can only make choices that we hope will have the best possible outcome. Despite this, the good choices that we make are equally likely to have negative consequences because we cannot predict the outcome of our decisions. As demonstrated by the classic novels to kill a mocking bird by harper lee and the blind assassin by Margaret atwood, even when one makes a good, noble decision to help another in despair, it is just as likely to result in a disaster.

In to kill a mockingbird, atticus finch, a prominent lawyer in the town of Maycomb, decides to defend an African American man, Tom Robinson. He makes this decision to the dismay of the entire town and all of the people who care for him. Atticus knows that this decision will cause everyone to hate not only him, but also his children Scout and Jem. Furthermore, he is fully aware that there is absolutely no chance that a Black man will be found innocent in a completely white jury. Despite all of this, Atticus decides to take the case. He makes the altruistic decision to help a helpless black man, but he fails. Tom Robinson is convicted and is later shot trying to escape prison. Atticus’ own son, Jem, is assailed by Bob Ewell, the man who tried to convict Robinson, and is heavily injured. The good, moral choice that atticus made resulted only in negative consequences.
Laura Chase of The Blind Assassin made a similar decision to Atticus Finch. She met a boy, Alex Thomas, who was fighting against corporate giants during the times of world war 2. When Alex went off to Europe, Laura gave up her body to protect Alex. She allowed a rich, powerful man, Richard Griffen, to rape her in return for the guaranteed safety of Alex. Shortly after Alex left the war, Laura received news that he had died. Laura made the good choice to sacrifice her own body for the sake of Alex, a brave rebel fighting against callous company owners for the sake of the masses. Although she did it so that Alex could live, the consequence was negative and he was lost. After receiving this news, Laura committed suicide. Nothing good came from her sacrifice and in the end both Laura and Alex lost everything.
Whether or not one decides on a good or bad choice, the outcome is just as likely to be a disaster. Clearly shown in To Kill a Mockingbird and The Blind Assassin, even when one makes a noble sacrifice for the sake of others, disasters can occur. Laura sacrificed herself and Atticus risked the welfare of his entire family, all for nothing. All one can do is make a decision and hope for the best.
