Places like Vassar and Sarah Lawrence require a writing sample with teacher comments and a grade. Vassar says it should be 2-5 pages long. So my question is..can I send my 8 page research paper on Geroge Orwell? I worked really hard on it and overall its probably my best piece of writing. I only got an A- on it but it was one of the best in the class (AP English Language). My teacher wrote that the first and last few pages need more evidence and might not have been necessary to include at all, but that the middle few pages were really good and is what I should do on college papers. Also, can/should I attach something to it saying why I chose it? or should I just pick something else......

You can open up the computer file of that piece, decrease the font size, make sure it is single spaced, change the margin settings till it fits into five pages. Give it back to your English teacher, explain your situation and hopefully he/she will just mark it up again for you.

I could have done that, but the application is due 1/1 and I have vacation until then...

My paper is 8 pages double spaced..do they mean 2-5 pages single spaced?? and if they did would mine still be 3 pages too long just because I double spaced it?

I doubt they care. That's just a general guideline. I wouldn't worry about sending an 8 page paper. Go for it.
