Grades too low for top schools?

Here were my grades in 7th grade:

English: A-/A-
History: B+/B+
Math: B+/B+
Science: A-/A
Spanish: A/A
Arts: A/A

If I get straight As and A-s this year, do you think I will have a shot at schools like Hotchkiss, Lawrenceville, Choate???

BTW, my SSATs were pretty good; 96th percentile

How are your EC’s and other stats? I’m sure that will also play a part in your likelihood of being accepted.

That SSAT score is fabulous. Your grades aren’t perfect, but schools aren’t necessarily looking for perfection. They need to make sure that you can handle the workload. Make sure that you stand out with all the other factors.

I do three sports and am a varsity athlete for one of them, and I also do art (e.g. drawing, painting) in and out of school, maybe 4-6 hours a week. I don’t need any FA, so thats a plus.

The FA piece is huge!

Is FA that important? My D has a 98th percentile with 797 in Math, a 97 average for grades, she does a varsity sport and two intramural sports, has two languages, and is a minority. But we cannot send her without the FA. So what are her chances?

Much much lower than without FA.

But doesn’t it depend on how much you need? Day students are cheaper, of course, and we are not seeking full FA, just what we need to complete the cost. (about 55%)

I’m DEFINITELY not an expert, but it sounds like your daughter has a good chance, mexusa!

Thanks. You look like you are a strong candidate. I’m sure you will get into at least one of your choices. Choate is our only option, as others are too far away. It will either be Choate or a well ranked all girls Catholic school nearby. Good luck!
