What did you get on the SSAT? Did you apply anywhere else?

Are you applying to be a freshman? Sophmore? If you're taking Algebra II in 8th grade, that's pretty impressive.

Also, what kind of teacher recs. do you think you'll get? Are you currently in a public or a private school?

I have 93 percentille overall on my SSAT's and I also applied to Lake Forest Acdemy. I don't think my teacher rec's are to great though:(. I'm applying for 9th grade and I go to a private school.

Hey, I applied to LFA too. I did get accepted but received too little FA :( You should get your decision in no time.

Ya I already got in lake forest a while ago but I don't think I'm going

Congrats, good luck in getting into Choate!

Do you need financial aid? Like a lot of it? I hate to be bitter, but I got rejected last year because of a lack of financial aid. And I'm not kidding. My rejection letter said that that was the reason, and that the rejection was not based on my academics, which they said were impressive. Your stats look great, just for safety, don't get your hopes up too high like I did. Try to prepare yourself for the good AND the bad. So no matter what happens, you'll be prepared.

I was surprised to see only 27% of the kids at Choate are on Financial Aid. Most of the other top schools have at least 35% or even 45%. Choate must be stingy!

katchakern2003, were you accepted to Choate, but waitlisted or rejected for FA? I thought the decision was 2 separate processes: admissions was one decision and FA was the second decision.

No, I got a rejection letter saying something along these lines. "We're sorry we're not able to offer you a place at our school........On a personal note, we should let you know that our decision was not based on your credentials, which were quite impressive, but rather on our inability to offer you the financial aid you need to attend our school. Quite simply, if we had more financial aid, we would have offered you a place at our school." Then they went on to say how they can't offer financial aid to everyone, yada yada yada. I suppose they were trying to explain to me why I was rejected. Because I was pretty sure I'd get in. I'm not saying this happens to everyone that applies for financial aid, but I made the mistake of getting my hopes up too high and this is what happens.

katchakern you have silenced people who think that if a school has a big endowment then it's not an issue to be applying for FA. Did you apply again to choate this year?

The same thing that happened to katchakern happened to my son at Exeter in 1999.

Keylyme, just wondering, since you've been through this prep school admissions process for a long time, do you think the schools have gotten even more competitive over the years? I read some posts from the 2004 threads and it seems even in just 4 years, admissions has become more selective. Would love to hear what changes you have seen since the late 1990's. Thanks!

That sort of happened to me, but I was accepted to NMH, and them when I wasn't offered FA my spot was taken away.

I thought about it, and decided not to. I didn't feel right about reapplying to Choate, the excitement just wasn't there anymore. I found an even better school, one which I can attend for free with our current income, and I'll find out on March 10! fingers crossed. And really, I'm not going around saying that you absolutely WON't get financial aid if you apply, I'm just saying that if you're applying and you need FA you need to be prepared for being rejected AND being admitted.

Well thanks for the head up!

best of luck to you!! I hope you get in!!!
