grading SAT essay please!

Many People believe that our government should do more to solve our problems. After all, how can one individual create more jobs or make roads safer or improve the schools or help to provide any of the other benefits that we have come to enjoy? And yet expecting that the government---rather than individuals---should always come up with the solutions to society's ills may have made us less self reliant, undermining our Independence and self-sufficiency.

Assignment: Should people take more responsibility for solving problems that affect their communities or the nation in general? Plan and write an essay etc.

Note: I know that I may have attacked the third paragraph a bit indirectly ... is it okay still though?

As our nation delves into uncharted territory with new inventions and progress, we will be faced with tremendous obstacles that may seem insurmountable. People may appear to be preoccupied with daily burdens such as schoolwork or chores, but making more time to help out the community is essential, and frankly not that difficult. By having individuals take their own responsibility with helping the community, we will be able to be more efficient as well as maintain continued progress.
Many of us are not aware of the community service opportunities that need a helping hand. Even though they may not be as pressing as the latest health care bill, these are issues that can help develop our character when we choose to participate. As I have participated in many community service activities myself, I can say that helping others, indirectly or directly, has a profound impact on how I view my daily life. By simply packaging goods at a local food bank, I am taking responsibility by helping those who are in dire need. Even though packaging a few hundred goods may not seem like much in the bigger picture, the intent of trying to help others can easily shape how I act in the future. I come out of every volunteering occasion with an improved awareness of the problems that plague our community. If other people can take a small break from their hectic lives and spend a few hours doing the same thing, our community would improve tremendously.
We as Americans are pioneers and trailblazers. Our history has proven this. Since the first pilgrims set foot on America, we have found a way to plow through obstacles and improve our lifestyle. When our governments began to form, we did not simply let our governments do the work for us. We maintained our individuality and continued to search for new directions to travel. Our country moved in perpetual motion due to the heroic actions of reformers such as Harriet Tubman and Martin Luther King Jr. By defying the status quo, they were able to break the barriers that allowed us to keep on growing. In times of peril, such as when the Great Depression of 1929 hit, we turned to new endeavors such as the building of the Hoover Dam to bring us back on the right foot. We face different issues today, but they all require the people of this nation to take responsibility for their actions. By making the right choice, we can pave a new road that will reveal our true abilities.
There are myriad numbers of ways to help our community. Even though we may not cause a great tidal wave of change, the decision to help will always result in a better tomorrow.
