what is the difference between getting a masters in accounting from lets say University of Michigan vs. San Diego State University.

uofm: tuition is approximately 40k
sdsu: is under 10k and claims that they rank 5th nationally in cpa pass

It doesnt really make sense to me to go to a nationally ranked school and pay more. If anyone has any input on this let me know. I mean the main thing is to pass the CPA right?

U Mich probably enjoys a recruiting advantage but it would be difficult not to find a job upon successful completion of any accredited graduate accounting program. Even very good graduate accounting programs will likely leave you with a few holes to fill before sitting for the CPA exam. For example, govt and non-profit accounting may not be covered. Consequently, you may want to take Becker anyway.

I've heard from a number of people that Big 4 salaries in SoCal are not cost of living adjusted and may even be somewhat lower than in some less expensive parts of the country. It seems that there is a good local supply and it's not difficult to recruit people who want to live and work in SoCal.

It would be hard to justify the $30K price difference.
