I am an international student, and I've been admitted into these three colleges.

IIT has many professors working on Power field, but it has a bad reputation..
SIT and NJIT is in New Jersey where offers lots of job opportunities.
UTD is at Dallas where has strong advantages in ee.

Has anyone known about these colleges, and give me a little advice?
Thank you very much.

As faculty member at Illinois Tech, I would like to know where you have seen the “bad reputation”? Our physics students who have gone to graduate school always do very well for themselves and in the power engineering field, we always have good placement in companies and graduate programs.

As far as comparing the schools, you said three but mentioned 4 schools. I don’t know anything about UTD but Stevens Institute is an AITU school like IIT and NJIT has a well regarded engineering program as well. If you go into an ABET accredited program (I presume that UT Dallas is accredited) then you will get a good education if you put effort into it.

For jobs, each of these schools sends a lot of graduates into the regional job market but some are more national in reach. Over the past 2 years, there have been a large number of companies coming for our job fairs at IIT. You might email the Career Centers of each university to see what their statistics are. Remember that it is harder for an international student to get a permanent job.

My guess is that it is the IIT in Chicago given the “bad reputation” comment. Not sure if it is about the South Side of Chicago or something else…

@xraymancs Thank you for your reply.Yes, I hear about “bad reputation” about security of Chicago on the Internet. Sorry for being not clear…
IIT has good competition on Power, and that’s why rank it as top 1 on my list. But there is very limited information about IIT on Chinese websites. I will email Career Centers for futher information.

The campus is not as dangerous as it’s reputation might suggest. If you use a bit of common sense and take advantage of the campus security escort at night, there should be no problem. I have been a faculty member there for 30 years and two of my children have attended the university with no incidents.

What type of engineering? If it is EE then UTD is an excellent choice. The Texas and especially the Dallas economy are among the strongest in the nation. Getting a job should be no problem. And the weather is way better than the others!

@xraymancs Thank you. I email the career center for statistics of employment, but I receive no reply. Is there any website that I can find information about international students’ employment?( IIT has lots of Chinese students)

@kldat1 It is Power engineering, one kind of EE. The location of UTD is great, but it is still a problem for a international student to find a job. Is there any statistics on the Internet I can refer to? Thanks a lot.

It would be better to ask the office of graduate admissions because they have a stake in responding to you. If I recall correctly, the placement rate for all graduate students was 86% or so. This includes anyone continuing on to another graduate program or returning to their home country for work.

Yes, IIT does have a significant number of students from China and as you know, it is more difficult to find a position if you are an international student without a work Visa. I do believe that getting an OPT Visa is relatively straightforward and provides you with 18 months of employment possibilities after graduation.
