Graduate Student Housing

Does anyone have any information/experience about graduate student housing? Both NW's own grad student dorms as well as apartments available in the area?

Is it possible to line something up from a distance?

S spent all 4 years of college in college dorms at Swarthmore but is interested in apt living for grad school at NW.

I hope the current students can give advice. But I am gonna give mine as far as safety goes here even though I went there in the late 90s.

You probably would get a better deal with off-campus apt. Evanston is a safe town, especially around where the campus is. But petty crimes do happen more often than you'd think, considering how neat and clean Evanston looks. Those criminals usually don't even live anywhere close to NU campus but they would go nearby to take advantage of the fact there are large number of students as their potential targets. They usually pick those who walk alone at night.

My advice is to use Maple Ave as the cutoff to the west as those streets anywhere west of it can get very quiet at night. The closer to the campus, the less likely you will be the only one walking on the street.
That said, I lived in an apt at the corner of Maple and Noyes for one year; my two roomates and I never encountered any crime. But we are all males and all of us are 5'9" or above. One was even a NCAA wrestler.
